Howdy folks,
I have a Case Medium Stockman, stag scales, SS blades, I bought several years ago. For years it was my only carry knife. Over the last couple years as my interest in, and collection of, knives grew, it began to sit in the box more and more as newer, bigger, "heavy-duty" knives took its' place.
After carrying only the Stockman for two weeks, I wasn't surprised it handled any of the simple, small cutting chores I do every day without a hiccup. After all, it did so day in and day out for many years before I developed an interest (cough, cough...addiction) in pocketknives.
What did surprise me was realizing that all the "heavy-duty" business I've been wrapped up in for the last couple years was a lot like the "super-sized" SUVs and pickups that have become "normal-sized," or the "super-sized" portions at fast food restaurants that have become "normal-sized."
I didn't handle any other knives other than kitchen knives during this time, and when I got my Presidio out for the first time in a couple weeks, I was amazed that what had once seemed "medium-duty" now struck me as wonderfully, stupidly, strong and overbuilt. Truly a little tank in the pocket.
Handling the ZT and the SMF made me realize, these are not "heavy-duty" knives. The Presidio, AFO, Military--these are without a doubt "heavy-duty" in every sense of the word.
The ZT, SMF, etc., now seem beyond "heavy-duty, something more like "super-duty."
I guess the point of all my rambling is I regained some lost perspective on my hobby, going back to something simple, elegant and basic made me realize just how beefy and strong some of the knives I'd come to think of as less than that really are.
I'll continue to put that little Stockman in my pocket everyday. I'll also put a Presidio or Military in my pocket if the mood strikes. What I won't do is think of them as anything other than "heavy-duty" again.
