Every spring after the snow melts and the frost heave my property gives up secrets from years past. Often its worthless scrap iron or stones that failed in the stone masons setting of our three foot field stone foundation. But back in the turn of the century burning and burying garbage was a common practice. So the earth gives up some treasures. Today when puttering around the lawn picking up half inch shards of green mason glass I came across this dime. A few years ago we actually found a quite rare artifact of an abalone button. As you can see it was hand made and drilled. We were informed that this must have been a trade item around the time of the French Indian War as abalone is not a natural substance here. More likely traded from some trapper, soldier, or someone from the colonies.
