When I was growing up, the sounds of cocks crowing and ducks quacking were common. So were cricket noises at night and the full-blown throat sounds of bull frogs.

That was eons ago. I have since moved from such rustic surroundings and found myself in the city suburbs where animals are a rare sight except for wandering domesticated cats and stray dogs.

However, recently one of my neighbours started rearing chickens and mornings have found me listening to the crowing of roosters. Such sounds bring smiles to my face. I think of the old times.

But this particular chicken is crowing at odd hours of the day. Just what I need, a loony chicken. Crowing at 2pm in the afternoon? I think this chicken need to be rehabilitated.

I have stayed on a farm once for a very short while. It was great while it lasted. The hundreds of cows and sheep and horses were quite a sight.

I guess I have to get used to living close to nature again. :D

We moved to the country to have animals and a rural lifestyle. Unfortunately, the neighbors thought that the country was supposed to be quiet, so they pressured us into butchering off ALL of our roosters! So now we have goats, which are much quieter (although far from truly quiet). And the goats stink, so guess which property boundary we put their pen on...?

Grew up in the bush, spent 13 long years in the city - now I'm living back in the bush - wouldn't have it any other way. I still like to visit the city, but only for a few days.

Looking out my window right now I can see a couple of young roos (kangaroos) feeding on the grass in the bottom paddock. I can hear sparrows and buthcher birds and every now and then a kookaburra fires up. Kookaburra's are related to Kingfisher birds and I'm not sure that their call has an equivalent anywhere in the world. Imagine a lunatic laughing like your standard arch nemesis/evil villian in the movies and you'll be close.

Roosters, or cocks if you prefer, crow for various reasons, and at any time of the day. I do miss them, living in an urban area now. Hopefully retirement will find me in rural surrounding again.

I thank my lucky stars for my country setting..I watched a young bull moose casually walk thru the yard as I chopped a bit of firewood today...I didn't bother him..he didn't bother me :D
