I've been wanting to pick up a Micra for a while and I finally pulled the trigger last week when I was at a local sporting goods store. I chose what I thought was a red anodized Micra (they were hanging on pegs behind a counter, out of reach).

When I got home and opened the package, I was amazed to find that the Micra wasn't anodized, it appeared to be "sheathed" in what I later found out* was colored polycarbonate! How long have these models been out? There was such a thing as a 'colored' Micra, right?

*At least, several Internet vendors claim it's polycarbonate..?

I think there were three versions of the colored Micras 1) anodized 2) painted 3) Polycarbonate.

But I must admit that I'm not much of a Micra aficionado so hopefully someone more knowledgeable will verify it.

Hi,

The painted Micras came first, followed by the anodized versions and lastly the polycarbonate.

The painted versions chipped fairly easily, the anodized are quite a bit better and the polycarbonate does scratch.

Hope this helps - Joe

The problem with the polycarb handle covers is they get little bits of dirt and crud down in-between, and there's no way of cleaning it out.

And it looks like heck when that happens. :(

I have several Micras, including several rusty plastic covered Micras. The plastic covered versions rust more easily because moisture can accumulate between the plastic and metal and does not dry off.

My preference is for the original, stainless version.

Man you are lucky to have a local place to buy knives. i do 99% of my knife buying via catalogs or online. When i rarely get to buy a knife at a brick and mortar store i always make sure i get to manhandle the display model before buying. I have a few knives i've bought online that i would have passed on if i had a chance to paw them first. Some knives look good in pics but just don't feel right in the hand.

Micras are great little knives, i have a bunch of 'em but i prefer the look of the regular stainless ones though.
I have an xe6 on the way (the gray one not the pepto pink one :barf: ), i wish they offered those in the plain steel finish.

How thin is the polycarb sheath?
Can you just cut it away?
Does it extend under the screw threads?

I don't have a micrometer but I'd say it's about .5 or .75 as thick as a CD or DVD disk.

It does extend under the screw threads and I'm not sure how to cut it away.

I'm carrying it in a Leatherman 'pocket sheath' designed for the Micra to (try to) keep it free of crud and such. My climate is super-dry so I'm not too worried about moisture.

(Famous last words? )

I cut the plastic handle covers away with a pair of diagonal wire cutters.

However, that leaves the screws sticking out like the electrodes on Frankenstein's neck. The screws on the Micra polycarbonate models are longer than those of the plain Micra.
