Guys,

I'm looking for a good breaching & chopping tool to keep in my bug-out bag. Something light weight and tough. After doing lots of searching on this forum, I've read good things about the LMAX and the K5 (plus they are both in my price range.)

For guys that have used these tools, what are the ups and downs of each one?

Also, which retailers have the best price on these?

Thanks for any comments,

Greg

both the K5 and Lmax are good products - take a look at the RD Hawk from Ranger Knives as well. I really like it. The hawks from Guild knives are great too - they really give a lot for the price.

I have an LMAX but havent held a K5 before. The Lmax is one of the best edge tool items I have purchased. I absolutely love it to bits. It is heavy though and some people would prefer something lighter I am sure. It comes shaving sharp. It would have not probs working as a entry too, especially as the head is multi position. In the other position (edge facing straight out) it would be a good prybar, particularly as the back spike then fits down the shaft acting as a tang.

I carry the L-MAX and sold my K5. The L-MAX is shorter than the K5 and lighter which makes it better for a BOB. The only thing I am not real fussy on the the sheath (or lack of); It only has a Kydex cover for the edge only and the spike remains uncovered and I haven't figured out a way to adapt the current sheath for belt carry if the need arose.

Yeh I second that..the sheath that the lmax comes with is junk. It can also be hard to get the axe out of the sheath. I am planning on getting a nice leather one made.

I decided on the K5 Utility Hammer Poll. At first I was attracted to the appearance of the LMAX & the K5 spike. But then reality set in: I really don't have a use for a spike.

The hammer poll will be much more usefull to me.

Thanks for everybody's input on this.

You made a good choice. While I really like my K5 Hawk-Spike, and put it through testing that literally destroyed lesser made hawks, I'm looking forward to my K5 Tactical Hammer-Poll, as being the better tool to suit my needs.
