What size LN Dewars do you guys have and use? whats the average cost of filling it? How long does it hold before refilling is necessary? Any other info would be appreciated.

Thank You,

Bill

The place I got some from charged $50 deposit for the dewar, and $27 for the Ln. I think it was 2 liters but I'm not sure. I don't know how long it lasts. Maybe a day. I treated a bunch of knives and played with the rest of it. Cool stuff. :) Just don't use it to wash your hands.

I bought a 10L bull semen dewar on ebay a year ago. The neck opening, which is VERY important to know, is 2.25 inches. I paid $150 for it and its in super shape - hardly used. It costs me $25 to fill it at AirGas and I get to BS with the guys while it gets filled.

You say the neck opening is very important. Is it important to the Knifemaker, the Bull or both? Also, was the Bull semen included in that $150 or was that extra? Im curious because I am sick of my bull semen scattered around the house and I need to get something to put it in.

I'm sure the bull cares not about the dewar itself, only how often he gets to contribute to it. If you want to know more about manually obtaining bull semen, then I'll have to refer you to IG.

Is that some kind of slang in knife making? "Bull Semen"??

Lol i wanna learn but now im kind of afraid :(

I think that is one of the secret ingredients in his HT relish.

How well does Bull Semen work as a quenchant? :)

Oh, and if any thread every needed a :jerkit: it's this one...

Seriously though. If one leaves a dewar closed how long will the LN remain? I've only ever use LN as a coolant for alcoholic drinks at parties...

deker, a good Dewar has a claimed leak (evaporation) rate of approximately 75-100mL/day when closed. I think in the real world it is a little higher but not a lot. Some people build an insulated chamber to store them in to increase retention.

Guys,I sent Hamza (pakoraman) a personal message and broke it to him gently.
The neck size of a Dewar should be sightly smaller than your hand. This prevents idiots from sticking their fingers in to see how cold it really is.
Higgy, don't pick on IG - someone has to draw the semen. At least IG uses his hands!
About a half a liter a week loss is normal for a good Dewar. If it is in a chiller box it is much less.

what's the dewar for? cryo treatment on blades? straight into the LN? How's it work?

I agree, Stacy. Four out of five bulls agree: IG is the best.

Probably a search is in order, Dan, but basically it adds a hardness point by immersing the blade into the LN. It is also reperted to add toughness as well, and recent conclusions is that it benefits carbon steels as well as stainless. Mete may be able to give a better answer.

Go ahead mete, or do you really want to start the whole "discussion" here as well?:D ;)
(just a little side note that has nothing to do with anybody present, to elicit a little grin and perhaps a subtle head shake from our friend mete. Sorry I gues it could have been done with a P.M.)

BTW my dewar was also for agricultural storage in bovine breeding Mr Higgins. If you live in an agricultural area the vast majority of dewars are indeed used to hold semen more than any other purpose, and when farmers are done with them they let them go cheap. I paid about 1/3 the price you did and you got a pleasant discount.

I actually understand the basic idea...but not the "how-to" part. Is it a simple setup?

And is it something you can reverse?

As in....Un-dewar?

:D :p :o

Very simple, Dan. Just get your dewar filled, and when your blade has been quenched, lower it into the LN for a while via a wire. I usually leave in for an hour or two. Some folks recommend one light temper cycle before the cryo treatment. To reverse, I would imagine the fastest way would be to re-heat treat the blade.

Ok, I think it's time for you to stop smoking the amboynia burl. :D
