Quick survey:D 3 days outside, say an old friend blew into town and has a hike planned out. Plenty of ground to cover, warm temps during the day, chilly nights-combination desert and mountains. Plenty of wood on the ground, don't have to take down any trees for fires;) Gotta stay fairly mobile. What steel are you carrying/packing?

Me, strapping a BRK&T Machete to the pack, 'ganzaa Clip-Point SHII to the belt, SAK and Grip in the pocket, Gerber saw in the pack. That ought to do it:D

She was my grail knife. I may have 'er rehandled with some slightly thinner micarta, and I do wish the spine was squared, but it's just about perfect for me. Almost an Infi Ratweiler:foot::D Took some doing to get the Spec-Ops sheath to fit, and I've only had 'er out to play once, but she's still a favorite:thumbup:

That blade is DEAD SEXY!!

I'll play...

Strapped to my pack, AK (Zombies) and NMFBM/Rat Daddy. Packed in the pack, Silky Saw and my Rachete. On my belt would probably be my HOG ASH or SFNO LE or Desert Jack. Gotta have my SAK and Spyderco Polliwog in my pocket...

Hell, maybe I should just make a kilt out of knives and take everything with me. :D

Don't know about you, but I have a hard enough time keepin' my pants up with just one big 'un on the belt. Full kilt, well, everyone else better hope I'm not going commando;):D Besides, who wants to be that careful sittin' down, taking a break?

Honestly, I would probably just pack my Ash1, and my GW and possibly my SS for thinner slicing action.

that would cover me pretty well. I don't think I would lug my FBMLE if I actually had eo walk very far.

Light and functional makes for great hiking. I think I would be able to fare very well with these three:
- Multitool: Victorinox Spirit
- Folder: Strider SnG
- Fixed: Camp Tramp

Egads, Man! No Infi??!! I gotta admit, every time I go out without my 'weiler, I feel a twinge of regret (is it ok to have regrets regarding Rats?:D)

If you're carrying 40 pounds on your back, what's the difference between one extra pound or two? Take the biggest blade for the tasks you need to accomplish.

Gotta have my NMSFNO, my BAD for slicing. and my SKELLY WARDEN around my neck cause its just plain handy. G.M

What do you need a saw for? You're packing too much steel. You don't need a machete in the desert or scrub either. Just a Steel Heart or NMSFNO (8 inch blade) would do for taking care of setting up camp, tending to the fire and for playing around (swashbuckling). A jackknife like a Sebenza for food prep would be all that you'd need other than that. If you want to go "all Busse" take along a Meaner, Warden or SAR4 instead of the Sebby. My 2 sense.

Trying to keep it fairly light and not forseeing too much chopping, a Sarsquatch would probably be the big knife, strapped to the pack. If I thought I needed something a little bigger, it'd be a Battle Rat. On the belt would be my SS4 (maybe a Mili AD), and a Grip in my pocket. Oh, and a Charge XTi in the pack.

I like my Cultie in the kitchen, but in the field I would carry Baby (SHSHII). Had my BM-E along last weekend for gathering fatwood...still my first big Busse and always with a special place in my heart! Here in northern AZ, you can be in timber, then have the ecosystem change with only a few feet of altitude, so I prefer a larger blade on my pack! :)

Fehrman Thru Hiker
and my Strider SMF in my pocket

knives:
INFI
and/or
A2
and
H1

For a Busse-centric solution switch out the Tramp for a SFNO. The SFNO is more durable and adds 3.6 ounces (17.7oz vs 14.1 oz) to your carry weight. Also, leave the Strider SnG at home and grab an AD instead and you have the benefits of same weight, more durability, can still fit in pocket.

So with a slight modification you have
Multitool: Victorinox Spirit
Fixed: AD
Fixed: SFNOLE

I had the Tramp long before I got my SFNO and grew attached to it. :p I know that the Tramp is a Swamp Rat but I still consider it Busse. Oh the insanity!

My total pack weight, with all the gear I need to stay out for an extended trip (without food/water), comes in at 18 lbs as I'm very weight conscious.

Ah, that one. I missed that one in the 'Ganza, but knew the whereabouts of a few, and it finally came my way later. I was a little surprised at how it felt in hand, with the blade only 0.22" thick, and the fat scales, it's very handle heavy and quick in the hand. That's a good idea about getting it re-handled.
