Should a 1500 grit stone (it's my finest, but the actual micron size is a guess) look like this after a minutes on a single knife, that already has been finished and I'm just retouching it? I soaked it for 20 minutes and no slurry. Produces a fairly shiny bevel when looks like this. Ugh. Loads up like those ceramic rods, gets a slurry when I flatten it on a larger stone, but nothing when sharpening the blades. Seems to me a good stone (this isn't) would keep itself cleaner by wearing off grit.

addendum: when the stone is cleaned with Barkeepers Friend soft cleanser it leaves a hazy or lighthly scratched finish. The BK stuff actually is pretty abrasive.

That 'haze' left by the BKF is likely due to acid etching. The abrasive content of it isn't anything major (especially in the 'soft' version of the product), but Bar Keepers Friend uses oxalic acid. That is what makes it work so well on ceramics, because the acid breaks down the steel swarf. If the BKF is left on a surface too long (more than a minute or so), it can cause the haze/etching (on steel too).

And I'll echo the previous question, as to what type of stone is it? Looks like an oilstone of some kind, and if used dry, some of them can load up very fast.

Thanks Sitro and OE for the info. Good to know about BKF. Slightly OT I'll let my wife know about the hazing / etching caution on her stainless sinks. The stone most likely is an oil stone of some sort. Garage sale find. I Googled and found some old threads here on BF to help me figure out if the stone has been oiled. Water beads off it even after washing and BKF and flattening. No biggie just curious and learning.
