local idiot gets rescued

Not too bright considering he lives and works in AK now.

i read in the comments he had a similar incident a few months ago as well. Darwin award winner

Seems to me maybe that bus should be removed. But there would probably be an uproar of some sort.

Stupid. Sounds like he could turn around and get lost. Hope he learned his lesson(yeah right).

what kinda moron leaves his gear behind without at least a backpack with some food, water, gps or map and compass and a few extras?!

he'll die one day, he lacks common sense.

hell probably be fine. hell probably cost someone else there life when they try and save his ass from his next stupid adventure.

Ok, lets think this through...

They didn't take food or water because they said didn't expect to be gone for a night.

Ok, that's stupid, but you can follow the reasoning.

But if they didn't expect to be gone for a night...
WHY THE HECK DID THEY BRING A TENT SLEEPING BAGS AND EXTRA CLOTHES?
Thats what you do if you're are planning to spend the night!

Now granted, in terms of killing you fastest, freezing to death beats thirst as a concern...but...
If you can plan 10 hours ahead for night-time chill, why can't you plan 1 hour ahead for when you get thirsty?

Didn't they think "Hey half a day from now when I start getting cold, I'll need food and water really bad."

People are dumb. The into the wild kid was dumb. He started a craze, people stuck in society's grasp want to get out so they mimmick the kid that hitchhiked his ass to Alaska and poisoned himself to death and pop culture hailed as a hero. Gives the rest of us a bad name. Came back from a hiking trip this weekend and got a "you know, you look just like that boy from into the wild." my response was "yes ma'am, but I eat Harvard grads for lunch, I know which plants to eat, how to skin a moose and I am incredibly better looking with a 20 day scruff than that kid."

Ok. There have been tons of "ldiot wastes money getting lost threads" lately and they all seem to get political, or not go anywhere.
Lets get over the people are dumb phase and keep it back to topic. What happened, and what could be done to prevent it. What can we gain from that particular experience?

"
He said the first time he got lost was in June when he left with nothing but the clothes on his back and went hiking up Mt.Healy. That time he was gone for about 20 hours even though he only wanted to make a quick trip up the mountain."

So the guy has got lost before I gather. When that happens, they normally start paying more attention to trails that they've taken or gear. Learn and start bringing a PSK, or make slashes on trees to mark where you have been.

Well...i doubt the solution would involve equipment...he would have just left it behind. :p

But for those of us more sensibly inclined...how about some way of marking a trail back to our camp site?

ah good point. How to do it without a knife. I once saw on a Ron Hood video about a tribe of natives that bend plants back in a 90 degree angle in the direction they came from. That would be a good one.

the three rock stack is a classic. Or you can do what I do and carry blue painter's tape in your pack to make the trail, and make sure to take it off on the way out. I've done pinecone arrows and that sort of stuff too but you gotta realize that what you can place to mark a trail, can be messed up. Anyone with half a brain can read a topo and a compass and in 10 minutes figure out which direction they should be heading. but terrain can be difficult.

An example of the "wilderness is just a big park - nothing can hurt me" attitude of many urban newbies.

I've been to that area, there are few if any marked and maintained trails. Travel of any significant distance required map and compass and orienteering skill and only an idiot walks out of sight of most of his gear without being highly experienced and knowing he can find his way back.

And this guy does not even seem to realize what foolish and dangerous things he did. He and his friend could both be dead instead of just a bit hungery.

I just realized how many people I know with less than half a brain. :D

As far as marking a trail goes, there are as many ways as there are people. I like your idea of the blue tape, nothing natural about that and no doubt that you'll see it, if it stays in place.
