So today I decided to go into the local knife store to see what they had. This was my first time in there since I joined bladeforums. While I was talking to the manager I was asking what he recommends/ dislikes. Kinda odd, he loves SOG more than anything and when I asked about some kershaws he just said he won't even show them to me and that they were crap. He had no problem showing me the Chinese knockoffs but Everytime somebody asked about kershaws he made sure we all knew he absolutly hated them. I have never owned one but can anyone here understand why he may act like that about a company that I have heard good things about?

Sounds like he had some sort of issue with Kershaw. IMO Kershaw kicks serious SOG butt with most of their stuff.

I don't know why he would say that but I do know I wouldn't set foot in that shop again.

He tries to steer you towards Chi knockoffs but trashes Kershaw? Yeah, sounds like he knows his blades. :thumbdn:

He knows alot about the steels and all the different processes in making them. I'm not gonna waste my time in there again. I guess from now on I'm ordering online....

Your friend at the knifeshop is officially spewing excrement out his mouth. as the proud owner of 5 kershaws and a ZT, I can officially say that they are an exemplary company and their products are excellent. I think, personally, that SOG manufactures their stuff at a low cost, and so they would be able to get them to their dealers cheaply. with the prices they set those bad boys at, they must be making bank.

Before any SOG fans attack me, I just think that a Aegis @ $60 with AUS 8 and Zytel is a bit overpriced. just my $.02.

It could be anything. He may not be very well educated about knives. He might get incentives from the distributor of the knockoffs. Or he could have a bad relationship with the sales rep who distributes Kershaw products to him. I wouldn't necessarily stop shopping there but I would definitely make sure to educate myself elsewhere before making a purchase. His word wouldn't carry much weight with me.

Most (not all) knife shop employees are as informed about knives as their gun shop counterparts are informed about guns. Customers beware.

This makes sense. Also, SOG excels at fixed blades. Kershaw is a folder company. Maybe that has something to do with it.

But it sounds like he gets his opinions from someone else and doesn't know all that much himself. If he did, he would explain himself.

More than likely he gets better profit margins from the SOGs, thus he pushes them more. Sad state of affairs, really.

What ever the case, it is highly dubious. Opinions aside, I doubt anyone that know anything about knives could say Kershaw is "Crap". You don't care for them as a matter of taste. Fine. No problem with that. Your taste does not effect facts.

That's IF the Sog's sell ;) There's a reason why Kershaw is one of the top 3 and Sog is not.
