I live in Albany CA and will be moving to Davis CA to study for college. I just looked up both of the two towns' knife laws and I have some questions.

For Albany, it states

Dangerous weapon = Any knife having a blade three (3") inches or more in length, or any snap-blade or spring-blade knife, regardless of the length of the blade;

It shall be unlawful for any person to carry upon his person or to have in his possession or under his control any dangerous weapon; provided, that it shall be a defense to any prosecution for a violation of this subsection, if, at the time of the alleged violation, the instrument or device alleged to be a dangerous weapon was in good faith in his possession or control for use in his lawful occupation or employment or for the purpose of recreation; and provided, further, that the provisions of this subsection shall not apply to the commission of any act which is made a public offense by any law of this State. (Ord. #654, §2; 1958 Code §21.6)

Does that mean EDCing a knife with a blade longer than 3 inches is legal? Does carrying around a knife, with no criminal intent, counts as lawful recreation?

For Davis, it states

a knife with a blade longer than 3 inches is a dangerous weapon

It shall be unlawful for any person, while carrying concealed upon his or her person any dangerous or deadly weapon, to loaf or loiter upon any public street, sidewalk or alley or to wander about from place to place with no lawful business thereby to perform, or to hide, lurk or loiter upon or about the premises of another, and for any person who has concealed upon his or her person any dangerous or deadly weapon, to loiter about any place where intoxicating liquors are sold or any other place of public resort. (Code 1964, § 7-102.)

is it legal for me to carry a knife with a blade longer than 3 inches if I am not loitering or hiding? Like I am just walking down the street getting from point A to point B.

All these knife laws are confusing. Like many good knifes that I like have blades longer than three inches, but my local code classify them as "dangerous weapons". I do not dress like a criminal and have never been questioned by cops, but it is better to be safe than sorry. Thanks for your help.

My local law is almost exactly the same. My questions are the same as yours.
I think that it meens if your not loitering than your ok. But I really don't know.

What knowledge I've gathered through the years, consist of don't get caught with a blade length over 3", unless the circumstance requires it. ie: Hunting, Fishing or clearing brush...

If for example, you were to unload your pockets for a LEO, it's basically up to his discretion to access the situation.

So IMO, it boils down wether or not you want to deal with the potential Red-tape. ;)

How would they measure the blade? I think they should go by what the manufaturer says it is.
