Is there anything at the local hardwear store that works as good pin material?
I am ready to finish a knife and noticed that I do not have any of the larger rod material.
Thanks

I buy brass brazing rod, 1/8" in diameter, at the hardware store. I buy the pure brass stuff and you may need to sand it down to fit the hole, which I think is a #31 or #33 jobbers (I'm not sure.)

Local hobby store for thong hole and mosaic pin material, welding supply for TIG welding rod for pins(no coating and fairly accurate sizes).

The hardware store is full of different things that will work as pin stock.Like Brass rod for brazing as mentioned,PLUS you can use different kinds of smaller sized bolts that are threaded on the end only thus giving you a rod of brass, stainless, and other alloys...Nails make great steel pins.Just use your imagination and wonder the isles for a while and don't just pass up things that look like they will work untill you have looked them over real good. Most hardware stores now days have little boxes on shelves full of all kinds of neat little things made from brass and other things.
Just go with a open mind and have fun looking,
Bruce

One of my favorite pin materials is the bare ground wire in 14 ga romex. I like copper and it holds well. It's also free!

The Home Depot does not carry any welding material.
They did have some zinc rod.
I didn't get it because I think that zinc corrodes easily.
Am I correct, will this make a good pin?
Thanks for the other tips.
I never thought about nails.
Great idea.

My local ACE Hardware always has a good supply of brass, steel and aluminum rods and tubes. Some brazing rod has flux in it that ends up as pits, watch out for this stuff.

lets see, a service hardware(Ace, True Value etc.) , a farmer's supply store (county general, ranch right supply, etc), a welding supply store, a welder, an old farmer or rancher, a hoby shop.

someone will have welding rod(solid brass, no flux)

I like Peter's solution. use copper,

Hollow, I got a couple feet of extra brass rod I bought at a hardware store. I can mail you a little bit if you want it. It's 1/8" diameter. I also have some bronze, and it's 3/32" (I think...). Both pein really easily with a polished hammer on a polished steel surface.

Email me at echang@uni.uiuc.edu if you want some extra brass or some bronze.

Thanks for the offer.
I am ok now. I bought some zinc rod. I don't know if it will peen but it sanded down ok.
Thanks
