Lochsa--To clip or not to clip, that is the question

I have finally made it up to the top of Scott Cook's list for a new Lochsa. Scott e-mailed and then called, asking if I wanted a tip-up carry he is finishing.

I've read some threads here on tip-up vs. tip-down, but other than my SAKs, all of my folders have tip-down clips, so I don't have the personal experience to compare them. However, I notice that I mostly do not use the clips at all but just shove the knife in a pocket, and I also think that the Lochsa looks a little cleaner without a clip, so I am tempted to get it that way.

This will be my most expensive knife so far, so I don't want to blow it, and I may just get it without the clip and add one later if I change my mind. But since I have a couple of weeks to decide, can any of you Lochsa owners, or maybe even Sebbie or custom owners, tell me about your experiences with clips on expensive folders?

Any advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks.

The bottom line is do you plan to carry it? If you do, and don't like clips, get it without a clip and have a nice leather belt sheath made for it!

One day I'm going to get a Lochsa. It's out of my budget range for now. When I do, I would get one without a clip. That sculpt is too nice to put a clip on. If you want to clip it, you can always get a William Henry pouch to slip it into, the pouch has the clip.

How long did it take for you to make it to the top of the list btw?

I have a Lochsa that I purchased from Scott at Blade this year. The clip on my Lochsa is one of the best pocket clips I've run across.

Personally, I find the knife too large for pocket carry without a clip. But that could just be me -- big thighs, so there isn't much room for stuff in my pockets.

no clip, it must be less than 3 inches long, lol

get what u want but if u sell it , i would want a clip on it

I personally like tip up, if for no other reason than to have the lanyard at the ready on top. But when it comes to sturdy framelock EDCs like this, I remove the clip and carry in a G2 sheath. Thats my prefered method. I would say get it tip up and just take the clip off until you may want or need it someday.

I carry one of these daily. It is tip up and rides in my right rear pocket securely. I would recommend getting it tip up because of the way the handle flares near the end. This flare gives your fingers a very secure grip when extracting the knife from the pocket.

There is a pointy corner that sticks out on the spine of the blade near the pivot. This area may cause some snaging if carried in the tip down fashion. It also caused the knife to open in my pocket when carried in the non-clip fashion. Also the pointy corner jabbed into my leg (non-clip fashion) through the thin pocket material and caused some discomfort. You may want to use a pocket sheath if you decide to go this route.

I don't know what else to call the "pointy corner" but I would like to state that I like this feature a lot. I use this area for a very fast lefty opening of the knife. It doesnt work as well opening this way in right hand because of the pressure of the fingers is exerted directly into the frame lock increasing the friction and making the knife harder to open.

Good luck in your decision. Whatever you choose you will love this knife.

I have a couple of Lochsa's, one with a clip (tip-up), one without. The knife with a clip is rotated with my large Seb as EDC and I find it has one of the best designed clips I have seen so far and is much easier on the pocket than the Sebbie clip. It is also very unobtrusive in the hand (but bear in mind I am a lefty who prefers right handed folders, just feel better in the hand). Either way, you'll love the knife.

With the contours, I'd go clipless and carry it in a sheath, but that's just me ;) I hope to get one this month, if all works well.

Beautiful knives and he does grind a wicked edge on them!

I took mine clipped, point-up, and asked Scott to stiffen the opening a bit so it wouldn't open in the pocket. The Lochsa is an incredible knife on many levels, probably overall the best knife in my collection. I bought it to carry and use, and that means clip! If I'd bought it for the case or just occasional carry, I'd go without clip (I don't like pouch carry).

I have the tip-up clip option. It is one of the best pocket clips, very easy on the pants. I carry the Lochsa as an EDC user, that means a clip is a must. Besides, the tip-up clip option is the most aesthetically pleasing.

I hate it when I switch out knives and go from a tip up to a tip down. It always takes a day or so to switch in my mind. So I always try to buy a knife with tip up (just my preference) but I will buy tip down if that is the only choice.

But if you are not going to use the clip, then have him leave it off. It will look better.

Thanks for all the useful replies. I am leaning toward clipless and getting a sheath, but may still change my mind. I am also trying to decide how much I will actually carry it, which may influence the final outcome, but since I have only played with one for a little while it is hard to decide whether it will fully replace my current EDC, I will rotate them, or it will wind up as a collector's piece.

Grapevine, I put myself on Scott's list at the 2002 BAKCA show in August or September 2002 (I had bought a large Oyahee from him at BAKCA 2001), so it took just over a year to get to the top. (Scott had predicted 9 months or so.)

Anyway I learned something from the responses which was the point. Thanks again, all.
