Hi,
after one and a half year of waiting I hope to pretty soon have a Lochsa in my hand.

But I find it terribly hard to choose blade steel. Mr Cook told me that he finds Devin's Ladder pattern stainless Damascus very nice and finally I ordered the knife with damascus blade. But I can still change, maybe to S90V??

What do you think? Any suggestions?

Whatever looks you like best. I don't think there's a big difference in performance. I'd go with S90V because I don't really like damascus on high-tech folders, but that's just me.

If it was going to be a user I would probably go with S30V or S90V, but that Devin Thomas stteel sure does look good. It would also be much easier to sharpen.

Good point. I will use it, never tried S90. I have some folders in damasteel and I find it very good for hunting purpose. Do you know if Devin Thomas steel is camparative? I gues I will end up with two blades...

If you need any help making up your mind on the type of steel for your Lochsa this photo may help. This is some of Devin's damascus. I don't recall the exact mix.

for a user blade...i would avoid damascus...if only because use will mar the beauty of the blade to some degree.

as far as s90v (old 420v)...its a good steel, but i found it very hard to sharpen and that limits its appeal to me. s60v (440v) is a little easier to work with. i still have a custom camp blade with 440v that i like.

Scott told me that he would sharpen the knife for free for my S90V blade.

I ordered mine with an S90V blade.

Have you ordered with some kind of inlays or double lug?

I didn't order the double thumb lugs, and I didn't know that inlays were an option on orders, but I did order the reverse finish, where most of the handle is satin instead of beadblasted.

From my experience, Damasteel holds an edge significantly better than most types of Devin Thomas damascus. I do think the Devin Thomas damascus looks better than Damasteel, though.

Damasteel is powder technology ATS34 and 12C27. I have a damasteel blade and it holds an edge very well. I don't know what Devin Thomas stainless damascus is made of, it's performance can be figured out from that information.

This is a great thread! I was going to post the same thing. I just got my email from Scott, that my Lochsa will be in the fall batch. I originally ordered a damascus, but can still change it no problem. I wanted to know what all of the options are. His email noted a polished face and back. Does this mean satin? I did think about S90V. What is that material like? And he noted a choice between latter or raindrop. Decisions, decisions, what is a mother to do? :) :)
Any opinions would be appreciated.
Dave.

Hi,
I got these advices from a Lochsa collector:

"I would recommend the standard finish if you are going to carry it. This finish holds up pretty well and still looks good after tons of use. I have been carrying mine for three years and, while it does have some scrapes, it does still look very good. This finish almost adds another element to the knife...very cool! The reverse finish shows finger prints very bad. Also, it will get slippery with moisture. I have not carried a knife with reverse finish so I can't tell you how it holds up.

I'm surprised you chose S90V? I have to say, that stuff is way to hard for me to sharpen. Many makers out there won't use it due to this. If you plan on using this one, I would recommend a steel that was easier for you to sharpen, something like S30V or the new CPM154. Both of these hold a great edge and are easy to sharpen".

So, I will order mine with standard finish and S30 I guess.

Hi all - Does Scott ever put a 2-tone finish in his blades? Satin flat, with a polished hollow, like Chris Reeve does? I did email Scott, asking him for advice. I know he is busy, but I will let you know when he reponds. :)
Dave.

I ordered mine with the S90V, after Scott told me he sharpens the knife for free. So, I don't have to worry about that.

Dave.

I've seen him do that before, he calls it a "cork polish". If I recall correctly, it's basically a horizontal handrub on the flats, and a really fine vertical satin on the grinds. It shows off the grind lines of the blade really well.

Scott told me that the cork polish finish can only be done with S30V, out of the steels that he normally uses. I asked him to do it on S90V, and he said that it wasn't possible.
