lock differences between the LARGE 21 & 25?

Can someone please explain to me what the differences are between the large lock on the 25 and the 21? Just curious...thanks fellas!

The main difference is the interface between the lock bar and the tang of the blade; the 25 has a ceramic ball that serves as the detent and the interface, the 21 has a smaller ball that serves as a detent for the blade only, meaning the lock bar actually touches the back of the tang of the blade, maybe a pic will help out:
Here you can see the ball

There is a gap between the lock and the blade when it's opened, the ball is the only thing touching the tang:

Here is a 21, no gap, full contact:

Hope that helps.

Nice pictures... this produces one solid CRK thunk and a smoother deployment of the 25, instead of the tick-thunk experienced with the 21. One area in which the 25 excels over the 21 IMO.

Very well explained, I understood perfectly. I can't wait for my 25 to arrive!! Again thank you for the pictures and for the explanation!

Does the detent of the 25/Zaan/Inkosi permit a free dropping blade at normal pivot tightness? My Zaan never did it, and my Inkosi is going to take a lot more breaking in before it'd be possible.

I agree, I love the 25 for the same reason, it's awesome.

You're welcome; the Unnumzaan shares the same ceramic ball interface; when I got into CRK knives last year I got a 25 first and an umnumzaan the Wilson Combat ones; for some reason I wasn't attracted to the 21 at all; then when I finally got a 21 it blew my mind, now I love them all. It is a very strange addiction.

Also because of the lock ball interface on the 25, and the lock ball being set back a tiny amount on the lock bar, your lock bar will be further over appearing as a later lockup. There are pictures in another thread showing how to judge your % of lock-up, but don't be alarmed when you first open your 25 and it appears to have a 70%-80% lockup according to lock bar position. In my experience, these numbers actually produce about a 50% lockup when considering where to ball is on the tang.

That's a very good point, I can tell by the mark the ball makes in the tang:

Thanks for the detailed photos and explanation. Have Umnumzaan; 21; and 25, and have observed this also. Did not think I would like the Zaan as much as I have. Purchased all three slightly used, and it is easily the smoothest and easiest of the three to deploy. Now try the older pivot? Why not.

You are welcome my friend; I agree with you, I also find it the easiest to deploy, but deploy fast, the 21 I don't even try to flick it, it is a pleasure to feel how smooth it is. Yeah, try an old pivot style Umnumzaan, they are about the same but I love the looks of it, the very cool pivot and the blocky gimping on it are really cool; I wish they still made it to be honest. I see them in the exchange once in a while, but they sell usually quick. I recently changed the orings on one of my Zaans and it is a totally different knife now in the way it opens without noise, I love it; also put a TiLock clip on it and it just made it even better, but that is just me and my idiosyncrasies.

I am having trouble sleeping at night waiting for my 25 to arrive. UPS just sent me a notification saying it might get here on Monday instead of tomorrow!! NO!!!! :(
