Lock Issues with PM2?

So my paramilitary 2 has developed some blade play in all directions, and it's not that big of a deal, but somewhat annoying. The side to side play is fine because of the smooth action, but the vertical play is strange. Anyone have any similar lockup issues? Thanks!

Tighten the pivot screw to fix side to side play (assuming the knife has only one screw), I am unfamiliar with compression locks but it might fix the vertical blade play too...correct if I am wrong guys...

How long have you had it and how much do you use it?

What do you use it for?

Only had it for 3 weeks going on 4. Just EDC tasks, I never wanted to abuse it- cutting packages and cardboard and other EDC type stuff. And I used it those weeks until I switched my edc

Ok thanks I will try that! Oh and when I did it before it didn't fix the verticle and made te blade pivot tight to open, but I will try again.

I've never had vertical play develop in my PM2. The side to side in mine cannot be adjusted out though, unless I make it too tight to open one handed.

You just got to find your butter zone between tightness and lockup. Worst comes to worst...send it to spyderco....I hate doing that!

On a PM2, you can tighten both screws of the pivot. There are two screws that lock in a sort of standoff in the pivot. Mine were tightened down pretty far on both sides of two different PM2's. The screw/standoff directly above the lock, behind the pivot screw, also allows you to adjust how smooth the opening of the knife is by taking pressure off of the pivot, so if you've tightened the pivot down and the bladeplay is gone but it's harder to open, try tightening or loosening the screw above the lock a bit.

What did you mess with the pivot for the first time? Was is malfunctioning? I'd put money on it having something to do with your adjustments. Did you locktite it when you put it back together?

No I didn't take it apart, I just tightened the pivot to remove the side to side and no there isn't any locktite in the knife.

Yeah same with mine. I want the opening and lock smooth but I can't to that without a little bit of side to side play.

For the vertical play, which is rare for this knife, from what I've seen, try loosening the screws on both sides of the stop pin, and then rotate it 90-180 degrees. It could be that there is a very slight manufacturing defect leaving an indiscernible flat spot on part of the pin. Rotating it will cause the blade to hit another "face" of it, and possibly lock up earlier.

Okay thanks a lot I will try that!

You should be able to.

Just adjusting the pivot screws probably won't be enough, on these knives the blade stop pin screws must also be adjusted. If all 4 screws aren't 'just right' uneven pressure can be put on the washers by the frame and it won't work perfectly. It can take a lot of screwing around (lol get it?) to get all 4 screws to play well with one another.

I've had 5 or 6 Para2s, all of them needed to be adjusted, but all were able to be made perfect with zero blade play and ball bearing like smoothness.

Very good point - I've been lucky with the PM2's I've gotten, and other compression lock knives, in that they have needed just minor adjustments. By the way they're contrived, though, there are enough adjustable components to make any one that isn't defective perfect or very close, with such adjustments made.
