Lock jamming on the Cold Steel AK47 folder

I don't know how popular this knife is around here, but if anyone has it I am curious if you ever had problem with the locking mechanism. I got 2 of these and they have the same issue, which I find really odd.

The lock moves fine when the knife is closed, but when the knife is open and the lock bar pops up, it gets jammed. Sometimes so stuck I have to bang the lock down with another object to close the knife.

The Recon Tanto has the same lock and works totally fine, not sure if I should try to take apart the AKs to see is something is obstructing the lock bar. This is unfortunate cause aside from the lock problem I really like the design of the knife.

Anyone have an experience like this?
Thanks!

P.S. This is a repost, I originally put it on the wrong board.

That just shows the commitment of Cold Steel to creating a knife which is named after a gun. They got it so good that it even jams like a real gun hahahaha...but then again AK47's are known for their remarkable reliability

I have one of these, bought it a few days ago along with another Ultra-Lock Model. All UltraLocks I've had showed the same thing you're talking about. The lock sticking in the locked position. My Recon-1 also had this for the first few days until it was open and closed about 100 times. I figured it was just lock break in. My AK47 folder stuck pretty bad out of the box, but after some lube and break-in it has smoothed up considerably. Unless your case is extremely severe, I'm inclined to think it's just the nature of the fit and break in. If it's real bad, just give CS a call and see if they can replace it.

Irony abounds, the real AK-47's while not very acurate are almost jam proof. Hence there amazing popularity in harsh climates. There knock off's made of stamped metal are much less reliable. Is this the lock that closely resembles an axis lock without violating patent? I was wondering if these locks worked in an "axis" manner and how well they worked?

I think I'd grip it in such a way as to be sure your fingers are out of the path of the blade in the event that it would close, (I doubt that will happen but better safe than sorry.) Using a board I'd then give the knife about 3 to 5 spine whacks on the blade and see if that doesn't set the lock and help to make it smooth out. Obviously it has a stick point at the far end when its opened so it may take down just a bit of a burr or something on the bar itself that locks the blade that is making it stick.

I'm not suggesting you really lean into it to ding the blade or anything like that. Just that you try to give some good taps to the back of the blade while opened once you get the lock to stick again. See if afterwards it isn't smoother or if it doesn't loosen the lock bar up so you can move it again each time it sticks and report back to us. I'd be curious to know.

I have NEVER seen an AK jam up. They don't shoot well but you can jam it with sand a dirt and it will fire.

I say just send it back to Cold Steel. The lock shouldn’t jam unless it is a desired function of the design.

NINJATECH: the locks on the new model Recon 1 have a new feature that I'm guessing is also on your AK-47. Worth a look at least.

If you turn the lock "screw" (bar) 1/8 of a turn, you can lock the knife closed. If the knife is open and it happens to get turned while be pulled back, it can lock the blade open. You might check this out and make sure you are not turning the locking bar any when you are pulling back on it. Just a thought.

In reality an AK-47 rifle will shoot a 3-4" group at 100 yards, whereas a AR-15 will shoot a 1.5-2" group at the same distance.

I wouldn't consider that too innacurate, after all a mans chest is much more than 4", and also considering the fact that most AK ammo is lower quality wolf or similar.

I had the same experience as Ghost Soldier. I think they aren't polished very well on the bearing surfaces in the lock....after a few manipulations, the problem will lessen and eventually go away as you use it. Poor QC in that regard, but the knife itself seems damn near bullet proof.

a bad AK will shoot 4" @ 100 yards with iron sights, my AK74 with a B-square mount and and old aimpoint will shoot into less than 3", my steyr maaahdi will do just as well with iron sights, also AK47s, AKMs and AK74 simply dont jam.

folks that say they are inaccurate havent ever tried them imho.

I took my Recon I (same lock) apart and fixed it. I recently posted how to do that. If you want I'll PM you the information.
