Lock noise (lock rock?) on new Military

Hi everyone,

I just picked up one of the new Spydero Military models (Knifeworks exclusive, S90V Ti/CF), and I just noticed that the lock makes noise if I put pressure on the spine of the blade.

I can actually hear it clicking when I tug on the blade. It appears to be more pronounced with a tight grip around the handle, almost as if my grip is squeezing the lockbar into the handle. The lock hasn't slipped or disengaged, but I'm a little concerned about it, both in terms of safety and in long term wear. I have a few other framelocks that I can get a tiny amount of noise out of if I try to force the blade closed, but none quite so audibly as this.

Is this normal for the titanium framelock Military models, or should I send it back?

*Edit: I should note that I like the knife otherwise. Just genuinely concerned that I have one that's defective.

**Edit: Here's a video of the issue.

When you say "put pressure on the spine of the blade," is the blade in locked position or is it closed? If the former, it means you are tapping or even whacking the spine of the blade, correct?

Also, when the blade is in locked position, try to push the lockbar a bit to the cf scale side to see if it moves.

Also, is the lock sticky? That is, when you disengage the lock, doe you hear or feel any noise or friction?

When it's locked in the open position and I try to push the blade closed is when the noise occurs. No spine taps/whacks, just grabbing it with my hand and trying to push it closed against the lock.

I can just barely push the lockbar over towards the CF side, and it seems to make the issue worse.

No lock stick to speak of.

I just purchased a Military myself, and it doesn't do that. The blade is extremely solid when locked into place.

OK - so the noise happens when you close the knife. It sounds the action is gritty/squeaky, which is not normal for a new Spyderco, let alone this expensive dealer exclusive (which I have two). While flushing it with hot soap water or disassembling and lubing might fix the issue, I strong suggest you to return it to Knifeworks for an exchange if that's where you bought it.

No, it's not when I close the knife, and it's not a gritty noise. The knife is open and remains open, but the lock clicks when tested with pressure on the spine sound of the blade.

Gocha. It appears to be up and down blade play, which is a pain in the neck to fix (I even doubt how many people can fix it at all). Pack it and ship back to KW ASAP for an exchange.

Thanks.

I figured as much. I'm just curious if this is something that others have encountered before. I've contacted knifeworks and will see if they can exchange or return it for me.

No - it is quite unusual for Spyderco folders. Not to any particular brand, side-to-side blade play is seen more often than up-and-down play. But side-to-side play is much easier to fix (most often just need to tighten the pivot a bit).

KW is a great dealer. They will take care of you (again, if you bought new from it).

I would send it back to kw for exchange if you still can. Doesn’t that model have a stainless lockbar insert? It could be that it is loose and making the noise. No way to really know without disassembly. Which is why I would just try to exchange it with kw or send it to spyderco. Either people will surely take care of you.

Or send it to Spyderco to be repaired. Maybe a new lockbar insert will correct the problem

If I bought NIB then it would absolutely go back. That sort of defiecency I would only accept on something like a blade swap or something of that matter.

Yeah that's not right. It could be that the lockbar tension is insufficient.
Mine locks up solid but I can tell that the lockbar doesn't have much more travel in it.

I've had knives where when you push on the spine the liner lock flexes a bit and when released the blade "knocks" against the stop pin as the flexion is released. Just a thought
