Lock position on Viele

Hi guys. I'm a Spyderco nut, too. I absolutely love my H. Viele, my Dyad, my SS Calypso Jr. and my Sharpmaker 204.

Question: I just recently purchased the Viele (plain edge) and the liner lock goes all the way over to the other side of the blade tang when it is in the open and locked position.

Is this a problem, flaw or defect? The blade locks up solid with no play, and it is not difficult to unlock it.

Comments from the group? (you, too, Sal)

That is what mine does, to with absolutely no compromise on the integrity of the lock. THe knife is a winner.

Dry Heat - It shouldn't be a problem. If a problem develops, we're not hard to find.

My serrated one is about 3/4 across, and my plain edge is 1/3. No difference in feel or function. My favorite Spyderco.

Mine to;I had mine about two years now and it's working fine. Lock is tight and it always went over to the other liner.I have the plain edge one and it is shaving sharp and stays that way a long while before it needs touching up.Great Knife!!

By design liner locks are meant to travel across the back of the blade as the liner wears. That's one of the nice things about the design -- it's self-adjusting for wear. As the liner wears it moves right, until it goes all the way over. Once it's hitting the far scale, the adjustment for wear is over. When it wears further, the knife will develop some play in the lockup.

At this point you can get the liner replaced, or replace stop pin with one that's just a hair bigger. Don't know which Spyderco would elect to do, but neither should be too terribly difficult.

I would imagine on a knife like the Viele, or also the Kershaw Liner Action, where the liner will often snap all the way over naturally, that overall wear would be slower than the typical liner lock that works its way over through time.
Also what's cool is the Spydie Viele's I've examined have no space between blade pivot and liner, thus it moves all the way w/out getting stuck open.

Some of you may have already noticed this.If you look at the inside of the solid liner you will notice a hole that the detent ball will go into when the lock goes all the way to the other side.I have seen no other liner lock knife with this design. My Viele goes all the way over too.It has been like that from almost the beginning. It has never loosened and still locks up with authority. This knife has the best detent ball I have ever seen.I like the way the handle was machined out to allow for the liner lock to move over without any binding at all when opening. Some liner locks use washers to achieve this space.I like the Viele design the best.Good job to Spyderco on this.
