Lock rock on Southard

I loved my Southard so much that I decided to get another that would be more of a daily user (this way I could have a safe queen). So anyhoo, I get one in and everything looks great until I flip it about 40 times, to which all of the sudden the lock goes from about 40% lockup to about 70% and it becomes VERY difficult to disengage the lock. It's like it's locking up and I am really bummed. Gonna send it back, but was wondering if anyone else had this issue? It is disheartening on such an expensive piece.

That is a bummer. Lock rock refers to vertical blade play though. Are you having that issue as well?

Shouldn't have lockrock at 70%...OP, mine has been flipped approximately 1,783,279 times and it is still at ~25%. I think you're right that it needs to go back.

Does it have a brown G-10 scale? I ask because there are some fake Southards with CF front scales out there.

It's brown and legit. And based on even just using it once per day, that's only 365 flips per year, which is 300 more than what I flipped it, so it has to be a bad one. I would assume that it should be able to go a few thousand flips at least before anything lock related occurred. Especially at the price point.

Nobody is going to argue with you about that. If you're sure it's real and hasn't been abused then there's a problem. Did you buy it new or from someone who may have been spinewhacking and chopping 2x4s? Just send it in and spyderco will fix it.
Sometimes a lemon slips through. This is true with any product, whether it's a $240 knife or a $100,000 car. It's inevitable. Sorry to hear about your bad luck, spyderco will fix it right up.

Disheartening would be if you didn't have a great warranty on a $200+ knife that slipped thru QC. Fortunately for you, Spyderco will most likely make it right and keep you happy.

Take it apart and make sure there's no oil on the titanium lock surface. Any grease on the lockface will cause it to slip further in and gall up on the tang

I think it'd be worth either seeing if Spyderco can fix it or if a new knife "fixes" the problem. The quality from the Taichung plant is extremely high, and I don't recall reading any other reports of a problem like yours.
