Lock slippage on Military?

Well, I was inspecting my Military, and checking for handle flex, flex in the liner, and so on after cutting some cardboard. I'd pulled the blade out, and felt the blade give a bit. I initially thought it was just flex in the liner, but the liner is actually shifting down the lock face towards disengagement. I tightened up the pivot (which was already tight to begin with due to the thin washers), but no improvement.

Just wondering if this is expected behavior? The reason I ask is because it seems solid, even with the liner moving towards of the tang; my concern is that I'll accidentally disengage the lock by white-knuckling/twisting the blade, especially since there's such a large cut-out for the liner.

It's an awesome knife, BTW, the ergonomics are dead on. Love the flat grind as well.

The same thing happened to mine a little while back. I got in touch with Mike, at Spyderco Customer Service. He told me to send it in right away. Got a brand new one in the mail in just over a week! Hoping for better luck this time. If the lock starts to slip again, I'm going back to my old G-10 handled Police. Darn, I wish they would put that type of lock on the Military!

Good Luck.

Mine's the older 440V version, wondering if there were revisions to the newer one to eliminate this? I'm guessing that mine was just a fluke, though.

My experience differs from your's a little in that the blade is centered completely, don't see how that would affect anything though.

I've seen solid lockup from my friend's military so far... my guess it's a fluke.

The problem on mine was on my PE S30V but I think it was just a fluke.I have a 440V and a CE S30V too and the locks on them are soild to the extreme.

The Military that I sent back was the new S30v model. It was only a few months old. After a while, when I would put a little presssure on the back of the blade, I could see the liner lock slipping across the rear of the blade. It never slipped completely off and allowed the blade to close, but something was definately not right. Thats when I decided to give Spyderco a call. They were great, and so far the new one seems fine.

My Military had the exact same problem. I sent it in to the Spyderco crew, and it stopped for a while, but now it continues to slip a bit. Like others have said, it hasn't slipped completely off yet, so I'm not sure if I should worry with it or not.

Aye, I'm starting to get this on my military after only light useage :(

Unfortunatley i'm based in the UK and sending this knife back (properly insured and tracked) would probably cost me half as much as it does to buy it in the US :( :( :(

Anyone have any insight ?

HHUUMMM,mine did not start doing it until after it got a couple weeks of carry.Maybe the first run of them had this problem.

I suppose I should quantify what i call "light useage", which was carrying for a couple of weeks around the home (cutting light foods, boxes and tape) and then one hiking trip (cutting cord, meat and boxes / sacs open).

All in all it hasn't seen much in the way of use and I'd be kind of disappointed if a knife I'd put this much stock in let me down :( (given I jumped from a £30 CRKT mirage to the military at £120 ($202) as my goto knife).

Thats about the same as mine got before it started.I sent it in and it was fitted with a new liner and has not gave any trouble at all sence.

Ah ok cheers chap, I guess I'll have too look into cheaper courier services.

Thanks for the advice.

Your best bet would be to send it back air mail in a padded envelope. It shouldn't be over 5.00

Does anyone know if the turn-around time is actually 4-6 weeks plus shipping time? I filled out the form thing on the Spyderco website, sent an e-mail. That's around a month and a half to two months!

I got mine back in less than 2 weeks including shipping and there was a hold up included in that.I marked it attn. Sal and it was delivered to the wrong place.

I've also had to send a 440v Military back because of liner slipping when pressing on back of blade. Spyderco was FAST in replacing it ( with the new s30v model ). I've had ZERO slippage with the s30v model so far. I believe that Spyderco is company that listens to it's customers problems about it's products and acts on it, unlike alot of companys out there, old fashion service, not dead YET. :) p.s. took me a week to get my new Military !! with a letter apoligising for my defective knife, and if they could be of further service not to hesitate to let them know.

Cheers for that info.

Out of interest how do you go about confirming with Spyderco that you're going to send a knife in ?
