Is it me or are lock-back knives louder than most other locks? I noticed this today when i was comparing my knives and the lock-backs just seemed a whole lot louder than the other types of locks.

Is it me, or is this a fact?

I'd agree with that, based on my own experience with the different common lock types, namely, the lockback, linerlock, frame lock, and axis.

My oldest Buck 110 (1973) sounds like a vault door slamming shut. Locks up rock solid, but I surely wouldn't want to use it for tactical ops where silence is required.

Interestingly, none of my more recent 110s are as loud.

My Endura is also pretty loud, but it's a reassuring kind of loudness... you know it's locked solid and you're safe.

I prefer lockbacks over all others, so I've got plenty to listen to.

yeah, that's definately true, all of my folders vary in loudness and also have a different pitch or tone. I actually like the sound of integral locks because you can hear a sharp snap sound as they locks into place.

I like the way a CUDA MAXX sounds when ya' flip it open. Not very stealthy though.

I agree also. The only lock that compares is the Axis for me. However, it isn't the lock that is making the noise, but rather the blade slamming into it as I can't help but flick the Axis lock knives open and closed.

I think the noise level has a great deal to do with the knife materials in an Axis lock knife. For instance, my Griptilian is way louder than my buddies 805. He has got full liners and G-10 which I believe makes the knife more solid and quiet.

My quietest lock was the liner lock in my CRKT Mirage. Very stealthy...

I lke the sound of the spyderco wegner when it locks its a good solid click.
