How To Lock Stick

I've been asked several times recently on IG for lockstick recommendations. I use Oxgard - it's been more effective than graphite, sharpie or any of the other methods out there for me. Apply a small dab with a toothpick on the tang where the lock will interface with the blade. Open the knife several times - hard is better imo, if you're comfortable with that. Carefully remove any excess the lockbar pushes over from the tang (don't wipe the tang clean). I've found that leaving the knife in the open and in the locked position after a hard opening overnight makes it a little more effective (it may just be my imagination, but it seems to work better at least🤷‍♂️). This should get you through any break-in period with a knife, and I've never had to apply oxgard more than once to deal with stick.

Interesting but my "solution" is to just to sell the knife if the lock-stick bothers me "that" much.

No need to treat the lock bar w/anything when I do that.

Never heard of Ox-gard. Looks like it’s a conductive grease with zinc in it. I’d imagine the zinc works similar to how graphite works, except suspended in a grease and lasts much longer I would assume.

Yup, another brand is NoAlox...they both work pretty well but some cases still require carbidizing.

Zinc is used as an oil additive to prevent damage from metal on metal contact allowed by oil sheer. It is in STP, too IIRC. Which makes it well suited to dealing with lock stick.

It's for electrical connections to prevent corrosion. That, noalox, coppershield... I've used it all in my trade. Oxidation and corrosion is one thing you do not want in between connections when the lines are carrying 500Kv and people are depending on that power.

When I had lock stick on my Gorgon I used a sharpie or a graphite pencil with good but short lasting results.
This stuff looks like something I could add to my kit. Thanks for the heads up.

I gave the ox-gard a try… whatdya know! It works! Although I don’t have toothpicks hanging around so I just take a qtip and dab the top of the nozzle, and a quick swipe across where the blade meets the lock face and presto, lock stick be gone!

What knife was it, BTW?
