Extremely variable. Lots of new "quality" folders come with 15-30% lockup and then slowly progress "over to the right" as the lock-face breaks in and stabilizes on the tang. I have never seen a knife that progressed all the way over on the blade tang.
If the lockbar on a Strider gets too far to the right, due to their lockup method, you send it in, and they will replace the thumb stud for one of larger diameter, which then "resets" your lockup effectively as brand new.
You will see CRK Sebenzas that are perfectly fine (and brand new) at 70% or greater, but the lockup stays pretty much stable in that position for years. Chris Reeve, owner, says he is perfectly content with brand new Sebenzas at 80% and it will stay there...securely.
Newer CRK Sebenzas and Umnumzaans are tricky, as the real lockup is accomplished by a ceramic ball...rather hidden and inset (press-fit) in the lockbar "face." Thus, the lockup could appear to be 80% across the blade tang, whereas the actual lockup by the ceramic ball is more like 50% and stable.
Spydercos and ZT's, even fine customs...in the $150-$500 range, usually appear new with lockup from 15-30% and will be expected to slowly progress to the right with use until a "stable" position is achieved, at which time it will pretty much remain there unless the blade is constantly flicked open habitually...as some tv watchers apparently do.
