LockBack and Frame Lock/Liner Lock

Is it just seemed to me or lock backs tend to have larger folded width than frame lock/liner lock?

I guess it is due to lock mechanism at the back of the handle that need more space.

For those expecting this as the usual " lock strength, which one is better etc... " well, you might be disappointed. :D
Have a nice day.

You could say that.
But it is not possible to make a knife as thin as Spydercos using the regular liners. Sure the Framelocks can do it, but blade retention isn't as good as the lockback.
Each has its advantage.
To be frank, a well designed knife wouldn't matter on whatever lock you use. The Spyderco Endura that I just got 2 days ago disappears in the pocket, and the extra width doesn't seem to interfere.

I'm a little confused here...BaliSwinger is saying that the lockbacks are thicker than liner/frame locks, but Calyth is saying that liner/frame locks can't get as thin as a Spyderco lockback?

Anyway, whatever the case, as I think Calyth was saying, the Spyderco lockbacks are as about as thin as a folder will get because they don't actually require a liner in the handle. The liner-locks quite obviously require a liner and this adds to the thickness of the knife. A frame-lock on the other hand can be made thinner than a liner-lock because the lock is built into the handle rather than being a part of the (added) liner. And something like the CRKT K.I.S.S. is as thin as a frame-lock will go (of course that has a lot to do with the fact that it has no handle scales.

Now that I re-read your question, are you talking about "thickness" or "width?" Thickness being measured as you look down at the spine of the knife or width being the distance between the spine and the edge?

Baliswinger and I actually concurs on the theoretical question.
He's talking about the closed width, from the blade spine to the handle "spine"
I'd think lockbacks are theoretically wider than a linerlock of the same blade shape when closed because of the mechanism, but because lockbacks doesn't require liners, it's possible to make it thinner when closed.
The fact about lockbacks are wider is exaggerated because many spyderco has the hump, which although has nothing to do with the lockback mechnism, it adds to the closed width.

My bad...I got thrown off when you mentioned the "thinness" of the Spydercos. Regarding closed width--blade spine to handle spine--I would have to agree that the lockback would probably have an increased closed width because of the bar.

Thing is, my endura prove me that was nothing important ;)

Gentlemen,
Thanks for commenting. I noticed only when I tried putting in my CS 29LT into a cloth 'sheath' (home made, just to keep it from dirt/scratch & still goes into the pocket) that was for my huge 5" blade balisong, it couldn't go it. Width (spine to spine) is the cause ..

Anyway, have a nice day. And recently I just found out that Spyderco Police is HUGE and the SS Handle makes it a hefty and heavy one.
