Hello! I am pretty new to knives, so I wanted to start out small. I wanted a knife under $20, and I got the Byrd Meadowlark 2. However, I have been having a problem, yes. The lockback is incredibly hard to use as of now. I have to put so much force on to it, it puts a dent in my thumb. And yes, it hurts. Is there anything that I could do about this?

Some stiff lockback levers will loosen up over time. Or there may be some gunk in there jamming the action. Or it could be a burr or other manufacturing defect.

You could sit there pressing the lever over and over hoping it to loosen. Or you could try opening it and working the action under running water in an attempt to rinse out the problem. But the easiest thing to do is send it back to Spyderco for repair/replacement. Even though it's an inexpensive knife, you have every reason to expect a functional product. I'm confident they'll fix you up.

I bought a brand new Colt Steel mini-lawman for my young grand-child, age 9. He couldn't open the blade because of the stiff lock. Both my son (6' 2") and me had a terrible time trying to operate it. A real BUMMER. My son said he'll put the knife away until the boy gets a lot bigger and stronger.
Give me a break, Cold Steel.

The spring under the lock bar can slide forward under some strange circumstances. Usually this happens during assembly, and when it does it won't open for the strongest of hands. It's not a big deal to fix, but I do not recommend disassembly if you are not handy with small parts being under a lot of spring tension that need to held securely in place and screwed together. :)
