Lockback redesign proposal

I posted this on the Discussion Forum, but since Spyderco produces so many lockbacks, I figured I'd post it here as well.

Well, here's an idea of mine. I love lockbacks!! They are ambidextrous, strong enough for most tasks we mortals use knives for and very simple and non problematic. Some people complain that you can release them if you have meaty hands and that you have to put your fingers in the path of the closing blade. So the redesign is done to answer these concerns. Check it out at the link below.

This may have been done before, though I have never seen it done. I apologize if I have stolen someone's idea. What do you guys think? Be honest. I'm a big boy and can take the criticism or praise, whichever you have to offer.

While I'm at this, check this link and tell me what you think about this too.

It looks a lot like the mechanism used on the AG Russell one-hand knives. I've not tried one myself but they seem quite sound.

BTW don't worry about people thinking that you're stealing ideas. If everyone thought that, NO ideas would ever be developed. Even if the idea you play with isn't original, you may end up improving on it. Also, the best ideas are often very simple, and obvious after the fact (see SpyderHole) so its not suprising that more than one person will come up with the same idea independently.

Keep at it,

Dom

I've seen it on A.G. Russell's one-hand knife, and I've seen it on some Pat Crawford knives. It's a great design for one-hand closing by pulling up on the locking lug while swiping the spine of the blade across your pants leg. I don't know if it has any subtle disadvantages in lock security and such.

It bears some resemblance to the mechanism used in a folder by Ray Ennis of Entrek Knives division. Likewise for some of those cheap scale release Taiwan autos sold in "Kit" form. Talk about opposite ends of the spectrum!

Yeah, now that I look at it, it basically is the lock used on the AG Russell one-handed line and Pat Crawford's Assasin. I think it's a definite step forward for lockbacks, IMHO that is.

Anyone have thoughts on the blade shape change for the Endura/Delica? It's the second link in the original post. It doesn't look as nice, but then again, it's just a thought.

Leroy - We've played around with some various tip changes on the Edura and Delica. We're still "sneaking up on it" little by little. Have already made two changes for increased tip strength that will be coming out in the next few months. Small changes based on thickness at the tip and serration location. Don't want to change the blade shape unless absolutely necessary.
