Lockbacks?

Hello all,

I hate to be asking you all for recommendations again, but I am at a loss as to what to buy in terms of a lockback. I am very lacking in my collection of one and would like to ask what direction I should take in finding one for myself. I have always been disappointed in the fact every lockback that I like seems to be illegal for me to carry here in Colorado (the law says 3.5" and below). I just though that I would get one more pocket knife for myself before I go to boot early next year.

Anyway, I am looking for:
-Reasonable weight in the pocket
-Thin blade and good edge geometry preferred
-Would love carbon, but I can suck it up and live with stainless.
-Looking for the best edge retention possible...well, we all are...
-From a company that has consistent QC (only production knives)
-Blade of a maximum length of 3.25", would be nice if it was 3" to be safe (I don't want to be pushing any officers buttons for having a potentially illegal pocket knife. They put up with enough as is on a daily basis).
-Would like it to be a clip

I am more than willing to work around my preferences a little, they are more of guidelines than anything else. I really appreciate you opinions and you time, I hope you all are doing well!

Please feel free to chat it up, but don't get too off topic :)
You guys are a wonderful group to be around, I wish you all the best.

No worries at all, I appreciate anything you have to post! I really like the GEC lockbacks, but I feel like they may be pushing the envelope.

Check out the Spire. Introduced by William Henry, now marketed by A.G. Russell, it's a wonderful little knife made by Moki.

That looks really nice! The only turn off for me is that thumb stud...but that is not to say I won't get one in the future

Another of AGRussell's knives you might look at is his Barlow line. I was really surprised when I got mine. Unlike my other three Barlow patterned knives, this one is a lockback and is hollow ground!

It disappears in the pocket as the knife is only about 3 1/2 inches long and locks up nice and tight. His stainless is hardened up a couple of points higher than normal and the edge wears well. It came sharp, but with a little work on the edge it is now a wicked slicer.

Great knife and easy on the wallet, too.

^Didn't see you suggestion Timberweasel! I like the long pulls on that little guy too! How is the edge retention on the Copperlock?

Does Buck make a smaller version of the 110?

Good Point Robert, which version do you have of AG's Barlow?

The steel is typical Case 420 series stainless; adequate for a light duty pocket knife, in my opinion.

Here's a pic of the Buck 55. It's also a great little folder!

You might want to have a look at this link, it is for ordering a Knife from the Buck Custom shop, though not true customs, you can select blade type 420hc, or
S30V, handle materials etc... the 501 would be well within your size limits, and Bucks HT on their S30V is excellent...worth a look if you have the time...claimed turnaround time is 4-6 weeks though...

Sitflyer, thank you so much for the link!! I could spend much time on this part of the site!

I just found that there is such a thing as the 112 that is 3" in blade length. Anyone have experience with this little guy? Sorry to be jumping around so much guys, I just have no idea what I want :o

I would recommend a Friedrich Hartkopf, Solingen. There are many different sizes of their lockbacks around. You can choose between a lot of handle materials (ebony, snakewood, cocobolo, stag etc etc). They might be available in the US and are in the size range between the Buck 112 and Buck 55.

Well, I don´t know if a well made german knife is an option for you, or if you just want to buy an US-made one. I´d give them a try!

Cool; if the #42's are a little too big, you may want to consider the #72's... they are (I think) nearly an inch shorter, and are equally nice. I hope you find one that is just right!

112 is an awesome lockback, my favorite knife of all time! But they can be a tad heavy for lots of folks to pocket carry, or EDC. They also offer an Ecolite version which has Paperstone slabs. The 501 seems to hit the mark for many as a pocketable lockback, hence it's suggestion, and your criteria of a good steel led me to suggest the Custom shop version as that is currently the only way to get the S30V steel...

P.S. AG Russell might be worth going through and having a look see as suggested, not just the Barlow, but there are a few that he carries that might fit your bill...

I like the Case copperlock quite a bit. In fact I'm carrying one today. I'd really like for them to put a 154CM blade in them, or a CV at about 58 Rc. But, they are good like they are. And affordable as well. There are really lots of options for you out there though. You could get an Al Mar classic Hawk or Falcon. Just depends on your personal preferences.

Today's mini copperlock:
