This may be a stupid question to most of you but a just got my first ever lockback knife about week and a half ago, the Spyderco Stretch Super Blue. Now my question is should I be able to flip blade open the same as say a PM2?? Right now I cant do that because I have to keep pivot pretty tight to keep blade centered and also when I losen it enough to flip it has crazy blade play. So like I said should I be able to flip blade open with SpyderHole or not???

Hmm...might need to be broken in a bit still. Maybe see if a little lube might help things along a little. Nice choice by the way.

After it wears in a bit, it is flickable, but not as easily as a PM2. The backlock will always be in contact with the blade, so that will add more friction to oppose blade movement (vs. the tiny surface area a detent ball would contact). I find it easier on the Endura, as it has a heavier blade (more momentum).

Thanks guys just got done lubing it up some going to flip it a bit and play with pivot. With some luck Ill find that sweet spot Im looking for. I was suprised that centering was off on this knife, talked to 3 other members who had same problem with their Stretch SB in last few weeks out the box. Its not a normal thing for Spyderco guess few got by them

I got my Stretch SB last week with the identical issues. It must be a combination of back lock and FRN handle. I've left it tight with no blade play and off center to the right!

Lock-backs by their nature are not going to be the most flickable design. Not to say some of them aren't pretty smooth, but by design you are fighting that heavy spring to get them open. The PM2 and others like it just have a detent to overcome.

You might be on to something. I have a SB caly 3.5 with grey g10 and it is centered with no side to side play and it has smoothed out. Hopefully the frn handle isn't the reason. If I remember correctly spyderco went with a different factory to make the more recent sprints in super blue since the 3.5 (if they are laminated super blue that is) so maybe that may be a possible factor. Hard to say really.

Lock-backs are not meant to be flicked open (neither are most folders, regardless of lock type, for that matter). Lock-backs are, however, typically stronger than the locking mechanisms of the "flick-able" knives out there (in general, and IMHO, of course).

I can flick my original manix open and it is a lock back.;) Though to be fair I am sure that the blade steel and handle materials play a factor though.

im able to depres the lockback with my index finger in the closed position to take all the pressure off the blade to flick open like butter on my cs voyager. try that with your spydie. its kindof like the axis lock flippy thingy. i can close it that way too

Yes mine and everyone Ive talked to has been off to the right side....one was so bad it was rubbing I hear

It will wear in. It will get nice and loose, and unfortunately wear for a lockback isn't like an axis, liner, or frame lock where the engagement point changes (and actually locks up stronger). It actually loses lockup as it wears.

I've never handled a lockback that was smooth. Honestly, I despise them.

Back when I owned an Endura, that was also my method of choice for opening and closing it. Lightening fast.

Triad locks get tighter as you use them. They have some angles and stuff cut into the tang and the lock bar so as u wear it out it gets tighter. To me the ultimate hard use folder would be a high end triad locking folder.
