Lockbacks

Very well, IMO. You often hear of more failures from liner locks and cheaper frame locks than lock backs. Essentially, the blade is pushing back on a solid piece of steel.

There's a lot of debate on this topic but IMO, a lockback knife is a good choice.

How do lockbacks rate in terms of strength compared to liner locks and frame locks..?
It depends who makes it. I would like to add that with a frame lock, your hand is pushing the lock shut adding more support as you grip the knife harder.

If you buy a good quality knife the lock shouldn't fail regardless of what type it is.

Lockbacks can be made as strong as one could need. Spyderco has had some pretty strong versions, the Triad Lock that Cold steel is currently using in some models is strong, and there have been other lock-backs that have a reputation for strength or have proven themselves strong.

So, what brings up this question, again?

Pushing against the spine, I'd say a lockback is stronger than a liner/frame lock.

Pushing against the edge, that would be hard to say. Liner/frame lock knives that have a stop pin are going to be REALLY hard to get to fail if pushing against the edge. I don't know how a lockback measures up, but there are a lot more moving parts when you consider what's pushing against what when the force is applied to the edge.

spyderco lockbacks are damned strong, as strong as most anything else, some others are really good too and some are not,

Like any discussion on locks and their strength, it depends. I think its more a fucntion of how well the individual lock is made as opposed to what kind of lock it is. A good lock is a good lock, and a bad one is a bad one, regardless of the type.

I often feel better about the solidity of a lockback but that probably is not always justified.

I have a dragonfly and delica with stainless handles and I love the fact that when I open it the SNAP of the lock just plain sounds like a vault! I have FRN and G10 models but that sound in those stainless handles is priceless

Since my current EDC is a Cold Steel Large Espada with the Triad Lock, you know what camp I will fall in.

Since the Triad lock is a lock back with a stop pin, I like it. I especially like the LOUD CLACK it makes when opened.

So I am back on lock backs for the time being.

My second knife being an Al Mar Eagle Ultra Light.
