I have a plain edged camillus maxx and the frame does not slide completely over the tang area of the blade. it goes about 1/3 of the way. I think it's because the blade is sloped down (see circled area in picture)

is there any way -- or need -- to fix this? if so, how would i fix it? with a file?

the lockup is currently strong, but i just want to be sure

also, if anyone has filed or fixed theirs, did it introduce any blade play while open?

That's just right for a frame-lock, especially a new one. Over a long period of time the lock bar and tang face will wear a bit, that's why the face of the tang is angled to give it some room to wear without becoming loose. My EDC currently engages with a little over half of the width of the lock bar. If you want to test your lock, tap the back of the blade on a workbench top, lightly and with your fingers clear of the blades path. If the lock holds you're golden.

I have a CUDA Maxx 5.5 and this lack of frame lock coverage would be unacceptable to me. Mine wasn't like that brand new. I personally would return it for another.

cdl,
Welcome to Bladeforums.
One small note - when you post could you be a little more specific? Just kidding, how did you do that diagram? Amazing!
Actually, the blade is intentionally ground to an angle. The problem lies with how much it is ground. If your diagram is right, I would want to have a more solid lockup. RR is correct also that in time the linerlock will move over. Your call, Camillus will gladly take care of your knife.

when i flip it open hard, it seems to cover about 1/2 of the blade, instead of about 1/3 when i open it slowly (with thumbstud)

you guys are probably right, it should get better with time

btw, i drew that with photoshop ;)

and mongo, i think i exaggerated on the picture - it's about 1/3 covered. it does stay locked up well

That looks ok to me. If it's 1/3 of the way it's probably a pretty new knife.
If it's all the way over, that means that it's time for it to be replaced.
Hell, I've seen spyderco linerlocks sits right on the left side (and mine you the liner is tiny compared to a frame lock) and it's still as solid as a rock.

As the titanium wears over time, the lockup will just get better and better. Kind of like fine titanium wine.

1/3 coverage is fine, i'd actually dislike it if the coverage was too much out of the box since Ti wears fairly fast compared to stainless steel. As long as it's solid lock up it doesn't matter too much how much coverage there is

You can always accelerate the break in and flip that puppy open al day long!:D

You're lucky! My CUDA Maxx had the lock going more than 3/4 across the width of the blade tang when I first got it - I actually returned it to get one that covered only 1/3rd of the way! I've flipped it so much that the lock is now at 1/2 the way.

One quick note: The locking bar will never go as far to touch the other side of the titanium handle. The ball bearing indent on the inside of the lock will touch the handle on the opposite side and prevent the lock from going any further. At that point the lock MAY NOT be as strong as the tension on the lock covering all the way across the tang is less (at least for mine it was) than what it is at 1/3 covering the blade tang.

If you want the lock to cover more of the tang, try unscrewing the thumbstud and shifting back towards the front of the blade and tightening it. This will cause the handle to touch thumbscrew later and allow the lock to travel across the tang just slightly more.
