Locking Knife Recommendations?

I live in California, and I'm looking for a good locking self-defense knife. So far, I've been recommended the Gerber Applegate-Fairbairn Combat Double Bevel, and the Benchmade 420SBT Resistor Snody. I'm willing to pay up to 130 dollars. What do you say? What are your opinions on the two knives mentioned?

I know nothing on the subject, so educate :D

I have a Snody 420 Resistor that I Waved myself and it is the sweetest knife I currently own. IMO. Go for that one. I can't recommend it enough. No offense to the Gerber fans but the BM 420 blows that Gerber out of water. No contest there. As I recall the Gerber has some pretty obnoxious logo stuff going on with the blade also which turns me off personally.
Oh yeah. I forgot to mention the thing I like best about the 420. It sits nice and deep in the pocket due to the clip which is really great IMO.

You can see mine here http://www.knifeforums.com/forums/showtopic.php?tid/715012/

And my friend Dirk's 420 here that I also Waved for him. http://www.knifeforums.com/forums/showtopic.php?tid/729808/

Don't get me wrong the Wave is nice but the knife is sweet without that feature. It is perhaps one of the smoothest opening knives I've ever owned. You don't even need the thumb studs. Just pull the lock back and flip and the blade is out in a flash.

I have the 3" version of the Gerber, and I like it, but it was a gift from a friend. Still, a nice knife for the $30 or so it costs. However, for $130, I would look at Spydercos and Benchmades. My pick would be the Spyderco ATR, but it changes all the time, heh.

Thanks for the replies. What do you guys have to say about the balance of the BM 420? Personally, I don't really care about the look of the knife, as long as it preforms well.

Ewww, don't say that.

Just kidding.

Remember that knives are like watches or something, you want it to do it's job, and you want it to look good.

True, but this is self-defense only. The Thompson Contender is a beautiful sporting handgun- but not practical for combat at all.

And yet another question: Does the BM 420's locking mechanism comply with California law? Doesn't CA law specify that the blade must have a tendancy to stay closed? I'm on the verge of settling on it, but then again I really don't like the penalty of law.

The Axis-lock knives do have a tendency to stay closed. to open, you can either use the thumbstud to push the blade out, or you can pull back the lock to release the blade. The Axis lock holds the blade in both positions, open and closed. The blade won't just fall open by itself.

I'd recommend an Emerson. CQC-7 or CQC-10. You can get these for around $130... maybe a couple bucks more for the CQC-10. Built like tanks, excellent fit & finish, great blade steel, superb design. And, they come with the Wave feature.

Peace.

Aloha!

Hmmmm, the Applegate wouldn't raise eyebrows as a "dirk or dagger" in Cali would it?

Okay, please bear with me on this one. IF this knife is for SD only, get a cheaper one as the one you use will be seized immediately and tagged as evidence. Face it, a Spyderco Endura or BM Griptillian will cut just as well as a 130$ knife...

Just *my* 2 cents. God bless

I've settled on the

But I don't like the gradient colors. Anyone know a cheap place to buy a 630 Skirmish in any color but kahki and rainbow? (and I said looks didn't matter :foot: )

I like the 630BK-502, but it's $175 :(

i would look at a emerson CQC7, 8, or 13, spyderco SS ATR, BM 806, all good knives in your price range.

the BM 420 is OK dont like it as well as a 806 though FWIW, gerber applegate is OK too, but much prefer the ones above to a applegate though.
