Just wondering...

which make/model of knife was the first "back lock" (i.e. Buck 110 type) on the market?

what about

Liner Lock?

Fame Lock?

I believe the liner lock to be rather old, as I've seen some older TL-29 type knifes that have the liner lock mechanism on the screwdriver blade...

IIRC the 1st frame lock was by chris reeeves on a seb.

backlocks have been around a while i dont think the buck 110 was the 1st.

+1 for CRK on the framelock. The linerlock is attributed to Michael Walker ~1980 but I'm sure I've read somewher that there were much earlier knives with this feature

The lockback has been around for so long I'm not sure who invented it but I suspect it is English or German rather than USA

I believe Opinel is responsible for its locking design ~1920

The TL-29's were not an actual linerlock as much as they were a safety system of sorts. The liner did not hold the knife/screwdriver blade open as it actually had a backspring to do that.

I have seen lockbacks on late 19th century knives, and I am sure they date back much further than that.

Walker created the current form of the liner lock with the ball detent in the locking leaf, but the basic lock goes way back. The back lock goes back even further, like back to Roman Empire days.

yeah i had a IIRC case sodbuster(?) with pretty much a liner lock back oin the '60s.

I know it's by spyderco, what I didn't know what if it was solely designed by Sal.
