re: axis lock; framelock; and lockback --- what does each of these look like (a link to an expanded diagram ? ), and how do they work ?
these terms appear so frequently and i do not really know exactly what they mean. thanks, rolando

Note the difference between a compression and a liner lock. The liner lock relies on the liner not bending at the end of the cut, while the compression lock squeezes the liner between the blade and a pivot. The compression lock wins.

Lockbacks, mid-locks and frontlocks all work on the same principle, which is pretty easy to see from the diagrams already posted.

As a general rule , liners are the most problematical , and are easy to manufacture wrong . The axis is a very strong , smooth functioning system . Both Benchmade , and Spyderco do very good linerlocks , other makers are more hit or miss . Personally , I generally restrict liners to small gents. type knives . Exceptions being the Spyderco Military , and Al Mar Sere 2K .
