Logistical question - shipping

I'm getting ready to sell a couple of axes (that I bought with intent to sell). Last time I sold one I had trouble finding a box that worked well and ended up buying a box that was too big and modifying it to fit the axe.

Where do you get boxes, or what type/size box do you use? I'm probably going to sell these axes pretty cheap, and don't want to lose money buying boxes and packaging them up.

Would love any tips, advice, and pictures you have.

Thanks!
Jon

I cover the bits with blue painters tape (no residue) followed by duct tape and then make custom packaging out of cardboard and packing tape. Keep the size to the minimum - keep the cost to the minimum.

Thanks guys, I never use the right search terms on forums. Google has spoiled me. Like the tip with the double tape, square peg. Looks like making my own boxes/cardboard wraps is the right path, I just need to get cardboard somewhere locally for cheap/free.

Thanks,
Jon

There's a few stores around were I live I just ask if they have any boxes they always give me a few free might want to give that a try.

Given the low number of axes I'll be shipping I think I'll be able to use cardboard from mine and my neighbors trash. If I get desperate there is a grocery store by my work that will have Plenty if I ask the right person I'm sure. I think liquor stores usually go through a lot of boxes too :)

One piece of advice: Think cardboard slips, not boxes. Most axes are thin enough that you can just fold cardboard over it, ala a piece of paper in an envelope. Then tape the mess out of the seams. And yes make sure those bits are covered up very well.

Thanks! This is exactly the type of tip I was looking for, it was kinda mentioned in the thread Steve Tall linked me too, but this confirmation clarified it perfectly for me!
Thanks!

DUDE!!!!!!! When you get ready to ship, leave yourself the option of redoing your packaging....

I just sold 2 double bit heads, Wrapped in multiple layers of strong cardboard. Maybe half again as large as a small flat rate box and about 4lbs weight. Virginia to Oregon = 18.00. . the other one was 14.00. Had it not been near closing and had I not promised to ship today...... It would have been cheaper to throw it in a much larger medium flat rate box...but the hour was late and the line was long. My mistake.

Single bit fit in flat rate small box for 5.80.

Get quotes and try repacking... may save you a bit.

You can buy boxes at walmart for 88 cents - then cut them to fit and seal the edges with duct tape = way cheaper than other options.

Perfect, just the type I was looking for. These will be axes with handles, so the box will be bigger than a flat rate box. Home made box sounds like the way to go!
