Well, I am trying to work on my makers mark. So far I have etched 2 blades with a simple G. There is a maker with BG(my initials) already out there. Is there such a thing as being TOO simple?

What is your logo design experience. Looking for insight from other nit picky people like myself!

now I am liking the simple G by itself......man I have OCD.

It's all in how you draw the "G"...;)

Do it block style, like Superman's "S" - that would be cool.

I prefer simple to a billboard, but they should still be able to identify you by it. I suppose its not a huge deal though as long as you have some sort of mark there. The folks who buy from you will make the connection, and eventually when your famous everyone will identify your work by it :D

I'll scan it today and email it to you. I did it round..... no decender. It looks pretty clean...... maybe you could post it if you can.

If you are planning on getting serious about selling the knives you make, I would advise against just using initials.

I see people on the various knife forums every week trying to identify some custom knife they got with just initials on it.
They are rarely ID'd.

I would suggest your first one, or two initials, your complete last name, and under that, your city, and state.

Mike is a very wise man! I used to use a round mark that was my initials done in a fancy oval. Then I realized, I could decipher it, but how would some folks, not knowing my name, figure it out. I trashed that and now put first initial and then last name.

Decided I'll finally try etching a mark on this current batch of knives.

Here's the question though, which side is the correct side to put your mark on? THink this might have been answered before, but didn't find it.

Also, is it bad to go legally change your name so you have something easier to put on there, since I'm still stuck with drawing this by hand? ;)

I can see it now...

B.Goode

As in, Johnny B. Goode....*groan*

I do think that would be neat, though...

Hey!

B.Goode!

:p

I sign paintings I have done all lower case

b.goode

but thats too small for my sign cutter to do so I just went with the G.

I may have to build an electro etcher:)

Mikes is absolutely right. and
I feel it's a big part of advertising and it's there for a reason ...Why??
though it may be gody I use grayknives.com now
I plan to have that domain till I die
so what easier way for contact in this day and age.
I can move from state to state out of the county
or be on vacation and not miss a beat. with a cell phone and a computer.
I can contact anyone any time if I'm wanted.
if you are proud of your knife put your name on it, you can miss sales if someone has to guess who you are.
years down the road who's going to have the knives? advertisement for life plus cost free after the sale..
it's your money or not?? just my 2 cent and a little forethought...:)

Your stencil doesn't have to be real big to have all that info on it, if you want smaller.
My stencils contains the logo,
M.J.HULL
Cottonwood,AZ
the bottom line is sized the same length as the top.

The smaller one is only H5/32 X L1/2"

My large stencil is H3/16 X L21/32"

So you can get the necessary info on it, without going too big, if that's your concern.

I do have the advantage on the city there. Knew there was something good about moving to OKC. :)

Thanks for the link. Thats b.goode's etch though.

I'll have to try the vinyl cutter smaller again. I kept loosing the centers of letters! I hate when that happens:)

Grayknives.com isn't a signature, so it's a billboard, I don't actualy want to buy your advertising for you. However times is a changin, and I'm not saying it isn't a great idea.

I wish I had nice handwriting, some guys can freehand a signature along the spine of the knife, I guess with those little buzz pens, or maybe it's a scribe. I don't like stamps or honkin logos. Interesting though that with guitars, they put these paper labels inside, and these cheezy things are major among collectors. You would have to be a pretty cool maker before you could get away with dispensing with those.

You sure are entitled to your opinion as I am mine
and I understand
what you're saying..

but it is a signature, a business signature,
you know anyone that walks in Nike footwear, apparel and accessories?
yes they have a mark but they will say Nike on them too
they pay big bucks to know how to advertise and we can
benefit on their advertising dollars just by watching these guys
and not limited to just them mind you..
like it or not it works.
I will put my logo elsewhere on a knife if the customer asks,
but it will be on there some where..like I said it's my opinion.:)

Its the same side that you have showing on your avatar. The "obverse" side.
