So this is not the best picture but.....

I just got this RC-4 in DT. I was just wondering why the logos look different than my RC-3 right next to it. It doesn't really bother me that much, but maybe it does a little. The logos on the 3 look much darker. Hopefully you can tell from the picture. Any input?

well, from the looks of it, your RC-3 has been used a bit more, am I correct?

It could be a patina forming, which is a dark, "safe" rust that forms on 1095 blades with use. The laser engraving exposes the steel a bit, so it could possibly be a patina.

I could be wrong, but that's my guess.

In that picture the RC-3 definitely looks darker but I am having trouble understanding why that matters. Is there some other issue that I am not seeing?

You'd really be freaked if your 4 came with the new ESEE logo!

Honestly, I don't haven an answer for you. Get out there and use the 4!

The 3 has been used more. It was the first of Jeffs knives I bought. I am just wondering because the 3 was that dark when I got it, and the 4 came and it was lighter like you see. I actually want to get all new knives with the esee logo. Heck of a ploy they came up with. So I don't know, I was just wondering why they would be so different right out of the bag thats all. The 4 also had black where the edge met the powder coat.

Hmm, I don't know what to tell ya then. The knife works with a darker logo, right? :D

Just use it and enjoy it, I'm sure the knife will serve you well.

My ESEE-3 sure does the job for me, whatever color the logo shows up as.

It's actually the 4 I'm wondering about. Every desert tan rat/esee I've ever seen has a black logo, and this one doesn't.

Maybe Rowen has changed their laser engraving process over the years and one is "new" and one is "old"..

Thats what I was thinking too, I was just seeing if anyone could confirm.

And I will definitely put it to good use. I really like the RC-4.

Wow man...He has a question no need to be rude haha
As to the question im sure its just the diff in models.

The steel is darker for some reason. Look at the edge on the 3. The edge on 4 is bright, just like the logo. But, on the 3 it's dark like the logo.
Just looks like a difference in steel coloration to me.
Nothing to worry about.

It seems to me that the first few thousand knives had black underneath the laser engravings. I recently purchased a green Izula marked in the 1,000's, it has black markings. My other one (#4004) never did have the black underneath.

Hopefully someone who actually knows the true answer will add their two cents and set us straight.

That what I was hoping for!

Oh and the blade on the 3 is not dark its just the horrible lighting.
