I have been making blades that are mostly coated (Gun Kote) or etched in ferric acid. I am going to be putting a log on them and had a couple questions. I will be using the Personalizer from USAknifemakers and was wondering if anyone knew what the best process was.
On the coated blades I blast them with 120 aluminum oxide to prep them for the coating. Would it be best to etch the logo in before or after media blasting? I know the etch can go a couple thousands deep and when done it in the past I have had scratches from 120 grit belt show through. So I don't think the media blasting would erase the logo, but would it make it less crisp? On the other side would doing it after I prepped it for paint would they affect the Gun Kote sticking?
Same for ferric acid etching. Will the electo etching not work as well if the metal was already etched?
I was going to be some testing soon (once the Personalizer shows up in the mail), but wondered if anyone had experience.
Thanks
I did try to search and haven't found anything on this
