I have been having some problems etching logo's onto tool steels... When I am done they show discoloration around the logo after time. Am I doing something wrong? Is there a place with comprehensive info on using Electro-Chem marking methods? I have never had this problem with stainless'. Any insight would be appreciated...

Hello,

Trace, you may want to get some of the neutralizing oil they sell at marking methods, it neutralizes the residue of the acid in the etch, i had that problem also on carbon blades. Also i found tha baking soda in a paste form applied to the etch then washed of after a minute or so works too.

I had the same problem on Carbon Steel. Try decreasing your Etch time and increasing the Power on the AC cycle for darkening. Also I have had luck with "LIGHLY" buffing over the logo using No Scratch Pink or something like that. I found that under a handle slab is a good place to practice

After you hit the right combo right it down and keep it with the etcher for next time.
Also your stencil may be worn out. Try a new one.

I almost forgot, Call marking methods and be sure you are using the right etching solution for your steel

Tool steel may require a different etchant.

yep bobh there are two solutions one for corbon one for stainless. since we're talking liquids i spilled some of the cleaner on me and i am pretty sure that it is nothing more that a lite liquid soap with a dash baking soda. at 8.95 a bottle next time i run low i will test my own recipes.

Thanks guys.. I am going to try the dish soap /baking soda thing first... I am thinking this must be the problem. When I first make the mark everything looks good but then it all goes SOUTH after some time even under oil!!! Thanks for the tips...
