Lon Humphrey Hunting Knife or Winkler Hunting knife

Tough call. I have the Winkler belt knife and the lon Humphrey drop point hunter. I love them both. The Winkler has the better sheath. Lon humphrey’s are still one of a kind and not as mass produced. Honestly they are my best knives and I don’t use them hard enough to comment on that. Cosmetically they are both great looking. I don’t think I am helping you much lol. They are both my favorites. I guess if I could only own one I would keep the Winkler but that is a tough choice and totally opinion based with no real explanation. I have smaller hands and the belt knife feels slightly better in my hand. If you have larger hands the Humphrey will give you more real estate.

Oh yah and since the Winkler blade has a slight recess curve and a flat secondary bevel and the Humphrey has a traditional blade shape with a convex edge I think the Humphrey will be easier to sharpen. But I still have factory edges so merely speculation.

What is the hardness of lun humphrey blade

I have only used a Lon Humphrey knife once it was a very nice knife ...

I own a couple Winklers a Hunting Knife and a Blue Ridge Hunter ... I love my Winklers and they hold a good edge ... are strong enough to field dress and break down Elk and Bear ...

The one thing I will say you may want to look at and decide ... the Winklers are thick behind the edge ... I decided to send one to Jason B. here from the forums to thin out a bit and sharpen ... he did great work thinned the edge some and put a slight convex on the blade ... it is one of my go to hunting knives ... they hold an edge well and sharpen back up easily.

I'm not sure what Lon Humphrey knife you are considering but I would bet it isn't as thick as a Winkler ... that may be good or bad depending how you use your knives ... but one point to consider ...

But I can tell you I would buy another Winkler in a heartbeat ... I have never owned a Lon Humphrey and only used one once ... I don't think you can go wrong ... I think just depends on your preference and if you are going to use it alot for big game I know the Winklers are up to it ... the Humphrey may have thinner blade stock and may be a better slicer ...

Depending if it is a Brut-de-forge, the thickness is usually 1/4 inch but ground very high so that the edge is sharp.
