Lone Wolf Paul Defender? Axial lock? Is it a good EDC for me?

Hi guys,

Any opinions on the Lone Wolf knives?
How is the Axial lock, cause I can just see myself needlessly siting in front of tv or something and closing opening it. How does it stand up to wear?

I'm really liking the Defender...well I really liked the t3 or t2 with wooden handles, but it seems those knives are gone, and are going fast on exchange. But the defender also looks very neat. Will it fit me?

Here is something about my knife use:

(if you want to read less, read just the next paragraph, and two last ones al the important info questions are there.)

I've been always a fixed blade guy (buying expensive knives and then going camping and hiking with them). And for some reason just can't buy a $400+ folder, although I just dropped that much on a fixed blade, because I found a good deal. My daily routine doesn't require much cutting, and when it does it is usually something delicate, maybe food, or paper.

But I can surely understand an appeal of CRK, hinderer, or even strider (don't attack my "even" as I'm talking about my uses of the knife). Its like having an expensive watch. But being in semi broke, getting ready for law school stage of my life I can't really justify buying something just cool for that much (later I will buy one of the high end folders for sure).

I also prefer big "tactical" folding knives, because I find them a lot more ergonomically designed, and they usually fit my hand well. Also they are at least in theory attempt to be of quality and strong, basically good f&f. So far I have been EDCing an Emerson CQC-10, and the ergonomics of the knife are just fantastic for me.

I had ZT and Military, both are great knives, just don't fit my hand in all the grips the way I want them too. Not long ago I got kershaw/emerson auto commander in a trade. And the knife is awesome, s30v, with standard grind and commander shape, pure awesomeness, asking to be used. And I like wear my knives and use them, when I get a chance.

There is just one big problem with the Auto Commander...California. While we can carry any folder in size it can't be an auto or gravity knife...bummer. So the Emerson has been neatly sitting on the shelf and law abidingly not traveled outside. And it very tempting. So before I do something stupid, I want to get a new EDC, to replace the commander.

Basically I'm looking for a folder similar in value to the commander I can go and trade for later on, but I can't figure out which one. People wouldn't usually trade down on their CRK's, for multiple cheaper knives, or cheaper knife and cash. So I'm going to stick with the price range of the commander. I'd prefer traditional grind, and I'd like a larger folder with at least g-10 handles. I do like some other Emerson's like cqc-13, a-100, mini cqc-7a (I also love the cqc-12, but there is no way i'm paying collector pricing for it) but I would like some other options with more traditional grinds, and high in reliability quality.

So would the Lone Wolf Defender fit me (in the looks department its a winner for me)? Or should I look for something else? Wat would you guys recommend. Sorry for sooo may words.

We can carry autos in California. 2" maximum blade length, unless that's changed recently.

Look up the Combative Edge M1 (Ti framelock), it may be possible to trade the auto commander for one. I have an auto commander, so I'm in favor of keeping it since it's unique.

The commander is just a tiny bit bigger. I don't care much for auto's but I like this one, and I can't carry one.

That m1 looks interesting, what is N690 co-Cobalt-Vanadium steel? I think ER's are made out of it, I just never heard of that steel before.

i have a lone wolf defender. i read about there being blade play & wobble, so i was worried, but mine is tight locking. its a lot of fun to open & close. the blade is very sharp, nicely ground. its light & carries well, pocket clip is not really deep, knife sticks out of the pocket a bit, but its not bad. i have the G10 version, but i like the black widow one from a.g. russell, along with the new one he came out with called aces & eights, but i dont know if i want to spend 200+ for one. got mine on the exchange like new for 110.00.i have about 75 knives, i seem to pick this one up a lot more than many of the others...

I saw couple of vids on youtube, most people there said theirs didn't wobble, so I would assume it would not wobble new. I'm just worried that it will wear out much faster then say liner lock.

I've had mine for a while and it's still solid.

If you're edc'ing for defensive purposes, the Defender is a very good choice.
You need to practice deployment though as you will need distance or space to open the blade in defensive situation.

But once it's open, it's good in several grips. You can choke up on the blade Filipino-style, or move down for extension. Flip the knife and it's edge-up for p'kal. In reverse grip you can have the edge both ways.

It's a folding fighting dagger basically. Not as utilitarian as the other knives you mentioned OP however, but I think it won all those awards not for nothing.

I have the one with the cocobolo handle, I think it is a fantastic knife. It really feels great in the hand and is the easiest to open and close of all the Paul locks. the only thing I don't like is the size...i like my knives to disappear in my pocket and this one doesn't quite do that, it is a smidge to big for me to EDC.

Give it a try, I don't think you will be disapointed. There is a reason it won blade design of the year (or whatever the award was)

So what you are saying is that you don't need that one?
