How is the n680 on the mountainside drop point. How does it perform and how is it compared to bucks 420hc. Im new so any feedback would be great.

Hi there and welcome to Blade Forums.

I'm not going to be able to really answer you question but wanted to welcome you just the same.

My experience with both steels is very limited. In fact I don't think I've ever used Buck's 420HC but have read nothing but very good stuff about it. Seems they really nailed the heat treatment on it. My only experience with 420HC is with a couple of Condor fixed blades and I was very pleased with it's performance.

I also don't believe I've ever used Benchmade's N680. Again, only from what I've read it seem's to be a decent steel offering very high corrosion resistance with very good edge holding. A good mix of qualities in what might be called a more affordable steel.

Again, sorry I couldn't be more helpful but perhaps someone with experience with both may chime in and be able to tell you how they compare.

From what I've read and heard others say though, they both seem to be very decent, affordable steels and you should be ok or GTG with.

Using and settling on 420HC would be a chancy prospect for some, but with Buck's backing and their production might - mixed with superb heat treating, allows them to make a good working knife (at a decent price point) that will stay sharp and will be easy to keep sharp. There's a lot of history to Buck's business methods discussed elsewhere.

N680 is a good steel, in the range of 440C; (not quite 154cm) and is geared towards corrosion resistance with an easy to sharpen edge. A knife using this blade would be ideal for outdoors work, and very similar to Buck's approach. And no N680 isn't M390, but with a whetstone in my pocket and in the field I wouldn't need to have my Edge Pro packed...not needed~!

Preciate yalls answers. I own a buck knife with 420hc and really like it. All ive read about n680 is the corrosion resistance (important in southeast louisiana) but wasnt sure about the edge holding abilities. Thanks again!
