I am looking at the center knife of the TX catalog and was wondering how you take a gaurd and bend it like that? Was this forged or just hammer taped to get the shape?

Had a talk with someone yesterday that it could be hammered depending on the metal... was thinking of using brass.

Anyone....?

I've never made a d guard before but have some ideas I'm going to use for one. I'm going to make the guard out of 1/8" bronze. First I'm going to cut a piece of oak out the shape that I want the guard to be. Then take two pieces of 3/4" oak and round off one edge on each with a 1/4" round over router bit. To shape the guard, clamp it between the oak with the rounded edges up and on the inside. Align the metal where you want the bend to be and tap it over with a dead blow hammer. After the bends are close to finished, I'll use the oak form I made for final shaping. OOps, shape the guard before you start bending. I'm even going to sand it slick on both sides and polish it up. Might not work out as easy as it sounds, but it's worth a try. Show us some pictures when you get it made Michael.

Take care!! Michael

Another thought. If you want to cup the main body of the guard towards the hand for extra strength, just round off the oak model in that area and after the guard is bent to shape, Take a hammer and lightly tap the edges of the guard to fit the form.
