I'll visit New Zealand for a long holiday with my fiancee this month. We're planning to spend a couple of months there to discover the whole country (especially national parks, hiking routes etc.). Could you recommend us some special places to visit beside the usual Lonely Planet recommendations? Any info would be highly appreciated.

Great country to visit. I spent a couple weeks there 3 years ago and drove from Queenstown to Auckland & beyond. I can say it is the easiest country I have ever traveled in, and I would go back there without hesitation. Pretty much zero danger, great infrastructure, and few people. The only thing that isn't much good is the food. Much of the country is set up for unique adventure sports - we kayaked in Milford Sound and did a Glow worm cave rafting tour. Those are the more expensive $60-150 options. Most of the camping/backpacking is cheap or free.

For backpacking, you can go to Mount Cook and camp in their cabin system - $15 per night or so, interesting company, and unbeatable scenery.

There is more backpacking in the Arthur's pass national park area. We hiked up one of the river valleys there and had it all to ourselves.

If you are into climbing or geology at all, check out Castle Hill. Unbelievable boulders there.

A couple months is enough time to really go all over and do some special things. We went in with no plan, just rented a car and started driving. I think you'll talk to people there who will point you to great places all over the country. You can have a framework for the trip going in, but it will definitely change once you are on the ground.

Thank you for the tips we'll check them out for sure! :)
We don't have an exact plan either. We'll start our journey from Auckland (we want to buy a cheap car there) and after the North Island we'd like to make a big loop around the South Island too.

Hey Mate, Im a guide specalising In Fiordland national park and also a keen outdoorsman, flick me an email and I can definatly point you in the right direction. Depending on what you want to do I can list eough hikes and adventure activities to last a decade!!!

Thank you very much Stewey! :)
The Fiordland NP looks unbelievable, it's so gorgeous and awesome! I'm sure we'll spend there enough time to wander it.

Could you bring your folders to NZ without any problem at the border?
I'm not sure which folder I should take with me beside my SAK and multitool (I know assisted folders, flippers, balis and double edged ones are prohibited).
What's about my Spyderco Endura for example?

Bring as many knives as you want!!!!!!! as long as its not a flick knife anything goes. You can carry a knife over here when ever you want too, as long as you have a reasonable excuse. Common sense is the law.

We were doing carry-on luggage only, so didn't fly with any knives. I bought some cheap knife at a store once we landed. If you are checking your bags I think you'll be fine.

Thank you guys, that's a good news! Up to now I was a little depressed to leave my folders behind. ;)

Stewey: The e-mail sending is disabled in your profile. Would you send me one first which I could reply?
