Just a quick question, I have a friend who is a civil war reenactor who is now started to get stuff together to be a long hunter, I have given him some Jeff white knives such as an English trade knife and a longer 7 inch knife, so I have a skinner with an upswept blade but am wondering if it would period correct for a long hunter and the fur trade as opposed to the mountain man era. It would be the top and sheath in the pic below. I believe I got it from a contemporary long rifle site and it was made GL Drew according to the description then. If not that then would my rifleman’s knife just below it be appropriate for the time period? It also is made my Drew as I got it from him directly years ago.

Just to share what the other knives are in the pic, not really period correct to the above post. Believe it or not the long butcher type knife, third one down, was made by AA forge for me before he got famous, (Adam also made me trade type knife and a Hudson Bay Bowie type, not shown) and the last is an elk handle Nesmuk by Mike Mann of Idaho knife works.

The top knife does not look like anything I've seen from the period, looks much later to me.

Also bear in mind, curly maple wasn't really used in the period, that's a modern thing which has been done so much folks now associate it the period.

Before he retired, Wick Ellerbe made some great examples from the period but I'm not sure if his website is still up. The guy who makes my F&I knives from PA only makes knives of extant examples of actual knives excavated from the period. I'm sure I could get some photos of him for the period you're after if you wanted?

I don't know anything about which knives would be period correct, but that Rifleman's knife is flippn' gorgeous. I mean, chef's kiss. What a beauty.

My impression is that the knives folks used in the first half of the 1800s were basically whatever they had available, but my knowledge of Civil War relevant hardware is really minimal.

Thanks, a few pics of extant examples would be great if you have time. Much appreciated.

My rifleman’s knife is also made by GL Drew, and what is cool about it is he made it from an old wagon wheel or spring.
