I know that sub-prime mortgages, California fires and so on have left you chaps from the colonies a little jaded on the subject of real estate.

I thought, however, that the following genuine deal would appeal to anyone with $2,000,000 rattling round in his trousers, and who'd like to be able to say to his neighbours, "I own Long Island. That's Long Island, Poole Harbour, Dorset, England..."

"It is the ultimate haven for those wanting to play Robinson Crusoe — a private island with its very own private beach, woodland and a 30ft high cliff.

Long Island, located near the highly sought after Sandbanks peninsula in Poole Harbour, Dorset, has gone on the market with offers of over £1 million being considered.

The uninhabited island has no homes and there is no planning permission to build one. However, the new owner will be permitted to pitch a tent in the wilderness for accommodation.

The island covers 30 acres at low tide and is surrounded by marshes that are a haven for wildlife.

It also lies within a site of special scientific interest (SSSI).

There is no jetty, so visitors gain access to the island using a flat-bottomed boat which is run up the beach.

On their arrival, they are rewarded with spectacular views of the Purbeck Hills to the west.

The island is one of five in the harbour, the best known of which is Brownsea, where the first scout camp was held.

Stephen Noble, the estate agent who is working on the deal, said: "It is incredible to have a completely unspoiled island in a harbour like this.

"At one point in its history it has been used to make pottery — as the whole area was — but now has no sign of development at all.

It has wonderful wildlife and is surrounded by marshes which attract many birds throughout the year.

"It is in a site of special scientific interest and it would not be impossible to get permission to build on it as other islands in the SSSI have buildings on them."

He added: "It is covered with some different types of vegetation; a deciduous wood, and coastal plants.

"The views across to the Purbeck hills are stunning and from that position you could imagine being totally alone in the middle of nowhere.

It would be ideal for someone who wanted to live an outdoor life, or for a wildlife trust or a multi-millionaire."

Long Island is close to the Sandbanks peninsula in Poole which has been ranked as the world's fourth most expensive place to live, behind Shoto in Tokyo, Barker Road on The Peak in Hong Kong, and Eaton Square in London.

An acre of land on Sandbanks can fetch up to £5 million, and its residents include Sir Peter Ogden, the owner of Computacenter, and Harry Redknapp, the manager of Portsmouth football club.

Long Island has been part of the family owned Rempstone estate since the mid-18th century.

Guy Ryder, the estate manager, said the island was being offered for sale to realise an asset."

Anyone seriously interested can get some extra context by typing "Poole harbour" (note the correct spelling of harbour...;) ) into Google Maps.

I'd love it myself, but unfortunately a chap finds himself embarrassed for the readies...

Gee we haven't been "The Colonies" for over 230 years.

I guess since we are such a "War Mongering State" we should just annex Canada and the UK. :D

Pretty cool, but a major bummer that you can't even put a house on it...
