Can someone please explain the idea behind adding a long lanyard with those long braid type hangmans knots on them? Seems they would get in the way. Thanks

I like being able to loop the noose on my wrist so I can "drop" my knife rather than resheath it every time.

Sometimes lanyards are just decorative. Lot of ways to rig paracord or leather through a hole. All depends on the person wearing it and the look they want.

I usually leave a wrist or thumb strap on knives I wrap. Handy in camp or when working over water or at height; hang the knife on a limb instead of laying it in the mud. I prefer slip knots or bead slips so that you can make the loop disappear if you are in brush or something. Plus it dresses up the knife. It also gives you a length of cord to use in a bind.

Regarding the ESEE 4, the reason for the extra long lanyard may have been to transport the Paracord easily. You can tie a few feet of Paracord in only a few inches of lanyard, which can be good on a "survival" knife. If you need rope or cord to tie something, it's right there, rather than having to carry it separately.

Well i saw one on an esee 4 that total length of the lanyard equaled the length of the knife or more(@8-10")

That's most likely to wrap around the hand such that if the knife leaves the grasp (either by accident or on purpose) the knife will swing left-right instead of back into your body.
