Last night I read a most distressing post from Will Fennell over in the Camillus Forum.
He was announcing the fact that the BK&T Fisk Magnum Camp Knife was being discontinued for lack of sales.
Now this totally sucks!
This knife is perhaps the best all-around blade I've ever held and used. It has performed flawlessly in my kitchen, in my garden and whacking back the bloody Camphor and Mulberry trees that I seem to be fighting a losing battle with for dominion of my yard. It's been used to make impromptu walking staffs for my better half and myself. I suspect it would be an equally great performer defending one's hide should the need arise.
The Magnum Camp is a joy to use. It's well balanced, very fast in the hand and has superb edge geometry. The classic BK&T grip fills the hand nicely and has never given me a hot spot or a blister with extended use.

If you have not experienced this knife, you better get a move on. Time is now running out for this great piece of cutlery.

I'm certainly happy I got one.

It might be a great knife but it is a goofy looking curved knife. I think it's looks caused it to fail. Some woui;d argue that the CU7 helped but I think it only helped a little. the MC has been out for awhile now.

I have to agree. No offense to Mr.Fisk or anyone else, but I always considered the Magnum Camp the last of the line I would buy. The blade shape is just unattractive. Probably very useful, but I just can't get into it. Now that the BK7/9 is out, I don't even think about it.

Misque,it does suck. But I have 2 and people that don't like the looks of the blade are just going to miss out on a GREAT all around knife.

Man!
Looks are once again proved to be deceiving! You could not ask for a better knife that you could call on to do ANYTHING! I have to find another as I just wound up giving mine to the 14 year old son of another missionary headed to Africa. Good cause but I'm gonna miss that knife!

Hmmmmm....sigh:rolleyes: This is yet another case of a
very good knife dying due to folk's buying knives based
on looks alone. Like my much loved Buck Nighthawk
the MC delivers the goods when needed. Looks be damned;)

It's not too bad for those of us who have one (or two). I have one and also think it is a great all-round big knife, best of the Becker line and best for under $100. Very different in its "use philosophy" from the clip pt Bowies that rule the fashion roost today. Just pay attention to the sweep of the edge and its angle in relation to the handle. Most production Bowies today appear to be refinements and/or improvements of the classic Ka-Bar design popularized during and since the Second World War -- edge and short clip point in-line with the handle, with fairly equal mass distributed along the length of the blade. In contrast, the "Searles style Bowie," on which the Magnum Camp is based, is less sheer strength-driven and more energy-efficient, finesse oriented, to maximize efficiency and performance over extended use -- which makes sense, given its earlier, frontier origins. Jerry Fisk elaborates insightfully on his design and its use in this wonderful thread.

I also doubt, for the aesthetic reasons stated above, that the Magnum Camp will be flying off the shelves anytime soon. I wouldn't be surprised if there are more remaining in-stock than in end-users' hands. If the M.Camp is not popular among this crowd at BF, you know it is even less so beyond it. My guess is that the prices will slowly start to drop, as vendors will eventually want to clear a "bad knife" off their shelves to make room for more inventory...

My two cents --

Glen
