Yes, I have a new khukuri. Actually, I've had it for two or three weeks now, actually, but I've only just finished sprucing it up (mostly re-finishing the handle), so now I have pictures:
It's a 12" Salyan, with Satisal handle and brass fittings which, if I read the maker's mark correctly, is a BURA piece!
And all because Auntie wanted to say, "thank you."
My father, a woodworker, supplied a piece of wood that I sent as part of the Great Care Package, along with some other supplies: you remember that teak-handled Kumar Karda that smoke-n-mirrors sharked a few weeks ago? I'm afraid we'll have to take the blame for that.
To cut a long story short, Dad now has that knife's "brother," since they had enough wood to make two. And for some reason I will NEVER understand, Auntie Yangdu decided to send me this lovely piece as a thank-you. Himalayan Imports is spoiling me rotten.
After my socks had been throughly blown off, I set about making this piece presentable, to share with the group, so here we are. the story also has anothe wrinkle: when I gave dad his gift (I owed him for a HUGE favor), he found out that I own a khukuri, and my family now know about Himalayan Imports. They've been sufficiently fascinated for Dad to send another shipment of wood, and for Mom to seriously consider getting an HI as a gift. (She even offered to buy one of mine!) So, the whole family is at risk for HIKV now, and I have only myself to blame!
