Hey Guys,

I have a long term BOB, some of the gear includes a tarp, sleeping bag and pad, bivy sack, Bahlco saw and A. G. Russell “Deer Hunter knife” for processing game.

What type of knife under $150 would you suggest for heavier duty work such as baton wood for making a fire to cook with, an emergency shelter, ect?

The knife needs to have the edge geometry that makes it a good cutter and bush craft knife and game processor in case the other knife breaks or gets lost.

Some I have been looking at are the Rat RC – 4, RC – 5 and RC – 6. I was also looking at the Fallkniven Knives A1, S1 and F1.

Thanks,

G123

There are some other factors that need to be considered. What part of the world are you in? Coast, Desert, Mountains....cold climate, warm climate?

12" ontario machete from Brian Andrews with his mods. Then I would either add a RAT 4 or RAT 6. I prefer the RAT 6, but I like a larger blade. If you decide to throw in a little more money, I would replace the RAT with a blade from NWA, the Sierra Scout should fit just fine.

How do I get hold of Brian to check out his mods??

He had a web site, it was offthemapoutfitters.com

Now I hear he is shutting down for some family time though. You should still be able to do a search, he posts in this sub forum a lot. Send him an e mail and see what he says. He might be able to squeez you in.

I'd get a small Wetterlings or Granfors Bruks ax instead. Personally, I carry large RAT for that sort of stuff, but I also have the little Wetterlings ax along, and its a much better chopper.

I'm going to second the axe comment. I'd love to tell you to get a decent 5.5 to 7 inch blade leuku, but if you have a knife you are comfortable with and want to carry a bit more, a small forest axe would be a good addition.

I had Siguy of this forum mod mine and it out chops everything else I own. Unfortunately, He is on a little sabbatical with Americorps. Its not too difficult to do and I think there is a tutorial on this by Pict of this forum floating around someone might be able to point you to.--KV

I would go RC-6. I have a patch knife for small woodworking and a multi-tool with a really good combo edge and use the RC-6 for chopping, larger tasks, etc. and for self-defence.

An RC-6 or a Condor El Salvador machete. :)

I am surprised nobody has brought up any of the Becker knives. You could go with a BK2, it is a little short, but because of its weight, is not a bad chopper. For less than $150, you could pair it with a BK9 and have a big chopper too.

Another combo might be a BK9 along with either an Izula or a Becker Necker. Both of the neck knives would make great little game cleaning knives, and you have a big chopper for shelter building and the like. Plus the BK9 includes a bonus little neck knife called the REMORA in a piggy back sheath.

A RAT RC-4 would be a great choice and could still be used to process game if something happens to your other knife. An RC-6 would be a good “big knife” for batoning bigger stuff but if you’re talking about doing any chopping, a machete is a better choice for that.
